Film "Poor Things" - Part of Shift from Rationalism to, Yes, Mysticism of Tarot Cards

Image
Just when you thought no satire could come up to British comic  John Oliver's takedown of McKinsey , here is movie  Poor Things .  HUMOR SO DARK, MIXED WITH SCI FI Set in Victorian England it uses dark humor, sci fi and alternating black and white/color to depict the wild journey of a female from traditional values to being a freethinker/doer who gains power and wealth. Simultaneously she softens enough to be able to love and forgive.  Essentially it is the story of a very pregnant well-dressed woman who takes a suicide leap into the water. Mad scientist Dr. Baxter retrieves the dead body, transplants the dead infant's brain into the woman's and electrifies what comes together to life.  Originally Victoria Blessington wife of a cruel rich man, the creature is renamed Bella Baxter. As she develops from infancy, in an adult body, she pushes for knowledge of the world and herself. Via a lustful lawyer she escapes captivity with Dr. Baxter and his assistant (with whom she had

Risk Is Risky - That's Why The Fool Card is First in the Tarot

"Harvard MBA grads aren't getting jobs like they used to" - Insider , December 28, 2023 Overall, employer demand for MBA graduates has fallen off. And that's even for those with that degree from a prestigious institution like Harvard Business School. Right now in hiring season only 86% of Harvard MBA graduates received job offers, compared to 95% in 2022.  Over and over, advice on professional anonymous networks such as Fishbowl Consulting warns not to invest in matriculating for the pricey MBA degree, with the exception of maybe a shot at a career change.  And that's only for a shot.  Employers are buying skills, not an academic credential. Reddit Career Guide is full of laments from the BA/BS Class of 2022 who remain without that first job, mostly because they simply lack the right experience. The obvious takeaway is this: There is risk, plenty of it, in professional life. As well as everything else. That's the overall message of The Fool card in the Tarot

"Maestro" - Tarot's Lovers Card Captures the Disconnect, Threats

Image
Many coming for a Tarot reading complain that The Lovers Card seems so harsh. For instance, the lovers stand separate, not joined. On the left hand side is the threatening serpent. The water at their feet is turbulent. In the background is a mountain which usually symbolizes challenge. Gently I explain that is a very realistic depiction of the force field we in western society call "romantic love." And that dynamic is captured well in the Netflix film "Maestro." Essentially it details the courtship and marriage of Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre. Anyone looking for insight about Bernstein's genius as a conductor and composer better look elsewhere. Like most passionate bondings, the one between the two starts off on-fire. Both seem to be lifted into their best selves, including professionally.  Then, as we have witnessed so many times, the hubris of a man's genius takes over. This mirrors the growing self-preoccupation of Elvis which broke Priscil

A Cancer Death in Rhode Island, The Stamford, CT Fatal Christmas Fire - Not Moving On, Instead Moving Forward

Image
There is the myth of moving on. That assumes that parts of a life lived can be left behind, sort of like emotional and spiritual garbage.  No, we really don't want that. Every bit of life has extreme value. Otherwise evolution wouldn't have had preserving memory.  In an interview with me, John Tarantino, who had lost his wife Patrice to cancer, replaces that concept with "moving forward."  He celebrated that in the  Ted Talk "Redemption Stories" which has almost 20 million views. To make the death mean something, Tarantino donated the proceeds from selling the family house and Patrice's life insurance policy to cancer research. In addition to his legal practice, he  has become the chief executive officer of an oncology firm. Tarantino proudly gushes that he now bunks in a small apartment in Rhode Island.  In the Tarot that ability to transform the past into a platform for who you are becoming is symbolized by the Eight of Cups. In the Tarot, cups stand

Embrace Reality: You Bet, It's Tough Landing First Job

Image
"No one told me it would be this hard to find a 'real' job." That's what a member of the Class of 2022, who had majored in business, blurted out at the get-go of a Tarot reading. My response: "Congratulations, you accept what is. And that 'is' is two-fold 1) The first job was usually hard to land and 2) That's a lot tougher post-Covid now that businesses are shedding workers and focused on cost-efficiency." I added that they could pick up plenty of job-search strategies by clicking on several times a day Reddit Career Guidance.  It is free, continually brought up-to-date and has posters who really care about you. It will direct you to other subreddit resources such as for resumes. Meanwhile, during that hunt for the "real job" grab just about anything that pays. Otherwise you will give off the wrong signals about your ability to parachute into a job and know how to comport yourself in a work setting. Also, there is the possibility

The Big Plays - Extreme Self-Confidence from The Tarot

Image
My, my, how optimistic so many have become. But, come on, we really don't know about the macros, do we. At least not with any certainty. With a few days of a horrific Dow run that euphoria could mutate back among The Scared into you know what.  However, whether it is good times or bad times there are the players who keep sizing up the opportunities, pounce on them and don't look back when this or that doesn't pan out. And don't turn back when clouds darken.  In the Tarot we call them The Magicians. They  transform what is into not only profits but solid new platforms on which to keep the good times rolling, no matter what. Their think abundance. Never scarcity. No chasing after crumbs for them. That is, keeping eyes lowered on the bits of action businesses or players leave behind. Incidentally,  CNBC i s featuring a video on how the mindset of scarcity can trigger reckless spending habits. Being The Sacred is downright counterproductive. The wonderful development is tha

You Felt You Did Everything Right - You Probably Did, At the Time

Image
They were golden. And currently they are nowhere near a job offer. They are the Class of 2024, going after positions in tech, finance and consulting.  Bloomberg documents how their fortunes have changed since last summer.  This generation is learning the fundamental of professional life: Nothing stays the same. If they were already in the workforce they would have picked that up already. For instance, a simple shift in who's the supervisor can tarnish  the branding of certain employees. The company abruptly loses the client. You could be out of a job, despite sustained outstanding performance reviews. What the messaging of the Tarot does is help job searchers not get locked in self-blame. At the time, they were probably making the smart choices. But, that was then. In this now there has to be a fresh assessment of where the opportunities are. Fortunately, there are many lessons out there from 2008 - 2009.  Some of those I coached who grabbed survival jobs such as in property mana

Your Self Gift for 2023 Holidays: Ordering the Rider Waite Tarot Deck

Image
The first one on your holiday gift list has to be yourself. Especially in this roller-coaster time for the economy. If you're like most of the rest of those struggling in America, your sources of income are vulnerable.  And, maybe I am biased but the best self gift, given all the turbulence expected in 2024, is buying yourself the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck . Right now on Amazon it's on sale for $14.50. Usually it retails for $18.85. Or you can pop into a spiritual retail shop to purchase those beginner cards. My favorite is Strega in Sierra Vista, Arizona. The New York Times assures you that you can learn how to read the 78 mystical Tarot cards to beef up your self-awareness. Most of mankind is born and dies without ever knowing who they are. That accounts for the lion's share of human myopia and lousy decision-making, particularly about how to create, preserve and grow wealth. That NYT article provides the fundamentals of DIY Tarot readings. In this guide - free to you -

"May December" - Just Like the Rest of Us, Here Are 3 Deeply Flawed Human Beings Who Have No Idea Who They Are

Image
Streaming on Netflix the 2023 movie "May December" takes sneaky twists and turns. Based on the real-life story of Mary Kay Letourneau it opens up 3 human beings to each other - and to themselves. Like the rest of mankind they are 1) deeply flawed and 2) totally unaware of what they are about. As many recall, Letourneau, a teacher, fell in love with a student, had sex with him, became pregnant with his child, went to prison where she gave birth to their child, and later married him.  Depicted in this film is what their lives might have been like post-marriage and settling into the tedious routine of everyday life. An actress, who will play the predatory in a movie, comes to visit to "get to know" the woman as well as what her life has become. At the get-go, she bears witness to a box of excrement being delivered to the house. That has happened before. What unfolds are cracks in the personas all 3 have manufactured. They have a peek into who they are and where they ar

From Royal to Nun - The Extreme Saga of Prince Philip's Mother

Image
Now we have the 54th anniversary of the death of  Princess Alice of Battenberg  (or as she was also known "Prince Andrew," when she took the name of husband Prince Andrew, a royal in Greece).  You might already have bonded with her during Series 3 of "The Crown." In an episode she is positioned and packaged as saving the British monarchy from being pushed aside as out-of-touch. And their funding cut.  Her son Prince Philip (husband of Elizabeth II and father of current King Charles) had done a botched job of trying to make the House of Windsor seem relevant. That was through a BBC documentary. It was soundly knocked. the royals were experienced as wooden. Soon afterward, her interview with the media fixed that wonderfully. My my, this charming nun who compulsively smoked and who had been the wringer over and over again, charmed the pants off the reporter. She was back in England because there was a political coup in Greece. A royal there, she was a target. As in the

Tarot Sessions - You Change, So Does the Messaging

Image
Part of the mysticism of the Tarot is that there are no absolute interpretations. Sure, there are supposed universal messages embedded in this spiritual exercise dating back to the 14th century. But, the visuals are wide open to unique connections between the force field and you. "Finding The Fool" by Meg Jones Wall documents that extreme range for how to read the Tarot cards.  Also, as time passes, you change. Therefore the messaging from the Tarot will change.  Years ago you might have responded to The Walking Away card - that is, The Eight of Cups - with euphoria. You had the strength and courage to let go.  Today you might focus on the mountains in the card, which some consider symbolism for the unknowns, as a warning that the grass isn't always greener. Maybe just different. And you may be clueless how different and if you can handle it. In current decision-making you factor that uncertainty in.  That's why when engaging in Tarot readings in-person I encourage

It Fell Apart - Getting Your Confidence Back (and it's not how you feel)

Image
It happens all the time: a setback. Given the volatile economy, there are plenty of those right now. You could be lucky and it is a low-profile one. More often it's high-profile. The raw pain of things unraveling is intensified by the jaw-jawing out there about what went wrong for you.  The toughest part of that experience is the typical loss of confidence. When the wounded come for a Tarot reading they primarily are in the force field of feeling. Wrong. Confidence, just like love, plays out in behavior. The message from the Tarot is to grab onto something, anything, in which you can achieve. That could be the most-in-demand food deliverer while you're laid off or even fired from management consulting. Your gig employer and customers all like you. Tips are amazing. You are offered extra hours. There may be networking with those who can open professional doors for you. That means you just don't sit around after a disappointment or even a catastrophe. You figure out how to
