You Felt You Did Everything Right - You Probably Did, At the Time

They were golden. And currently they are nowhere near a job offer. They are the Class of 2024, going after positions in tech, finance and consulting. Bloomberg documents how their fortunes have changed since last summer.

This generation is learning the fundamental of professional life: Nothing stays the same. If they were already in the workforce they would have picked that up already. For instance, a simple shift in who's the supervisor can tarnish  the branding of certain employees. The company abruptly loses the client. You could be out of a job, despite sustained outstanding performance reviews.

What the messaging of the Tarot does is help job searchers not get locked in self-blame. At the time, they were probably making the smart choices. But, that was then.

In this now there has to be a fresh assessment of where the opportunities are. Fortunately, there are many lessons out there from 2008 - 2009.

Some of those I coached who grabbed survival jobs such as in property management are still there - but at the top of food chain. The game becomes to do work, any kind. Otherwise skills and confidence erode. You can't just sit around for a year or more and just apply for what you had considered your dream job. The University of Michigan is having graduates who entered that market back then talk with those in their senior year.
