"Maestro" - Tarot's Lovers Card Captures the Disconnect, Threats

Many coming for a Tarot reading complain that The Lovers Card seems so harsh. For instance, the lovers stand separate, not joined. On the left hand side is the threatening serpent. The water at their feet is turbulent. In the background is a mountain which usually symbolizes challenge.

Gently I explain that is a very realistic depiction of the force field we in western society call "romantic love." And that dynamic is captured well in the Netflix film "Maestro." Essentially it details the courtship and marriage of Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre. Anyone looking for insight about Bernstein's genius as a conductor and composer better look elsewhere.

Like most passionate bondings, the one between the two starts off on-fire. Both seem to be lifted into their best selves, including professionally.

Then, as we have witnessed so many times, the hubris of a man's genius takes over. This mirrors the growing self-preoccupation of Elvis which broke Priscilla and eventually drove her away. Except with Bernstein there is the added factor of his chase after sex with males. Put together all of that and what used to be Felicia goes poof.

Some might interpret her cancer as a result of the psychic wounding. Whatever. To Bernstein's credit, he is there for her in her final days. Actually the film begins with a cameo of him by the piano wistfully thinking back to Felicia in his life.

The film ends with the audience wondering: Should those who accomplish great things be forgiven for how they seem to treat others? It is well known that Steve Jobs was reckless in human relationships, both personal and professional.

However, a new Ted Talk "Redemption Stories" provides a different template. Prominent lawyer, with clients such as ARCO and wins in landmark cases, John Tarantino unleashes the story of love cut short by the death of his wife Patrice. When she was diagnosed with cancer, both of them transformed the moment into a movement to decode, treat and eventually cure the disease. In that they were a team.

To fund the cause the family agreed to donate the proceeds of Patrice's life insurance policy to oncology research. Since John couldn't bear to be in the house they had shared he sold it. All the funds for that went to the movement. In only five months the Ted Talk has had about 20 million views. Tarantino has also thrown his business and leadership skills into the cause, working as a chief executive officer for an oncology firm. That is in addition to practicing law.

A core message from the Tarot and from the marriage of the Tarantinos is this: "Love" is not a feeling. It is behavior. Bernstein claimed deep feeling for Felicia. But how did he behave most of the time during the marriage? Watch "Maestro" and "Redemption Stories" side-by-side.
