Tarot Readings About Work - Tough to Soften Brutal Realities

For the majority of employees in the US and Canada there is intense anxiety about holding onto their jobs or even contract assignments. That also is the dominant feeling set among owners of small businesses. The latter are preoccupied if the enterprises will fail. Of course, they come to a Tarot reading in hopes of good news. Rarely is that happeining in 2023.  Most often the Two of Swords card pops up. That features a woman who is wearing a blindfold. She refuses to see what is happening. In her hands are two swords. One sends the message of strategic smarts. The other of rigid mindsets which impede figuring out the dynamics of how to continue to make a good living in this volatile economy full of uncertainties.  Once the Two of Swords introduces its messaging, it is challenging for me to transmit that to clients. Typically, they are so locked in fear that they are not open to solutions for ensuring they can continue to financially survive, no matter what is happeng in the workplace o

The Tarot Is Not About Fortune-Telling

Those who believe in the mystical power of the Tarot come not for fortune-telling.  Instead they decide to participate in a Tarot reading in order gain insight into what could be. And then, if they are determined, they can strive to change that.  There is no such thing as "destiny." And it is the human being, not some external force field we think of as The Universe, who shapes the present and the future.  As for the past, as the Five of Cups messages, its impact depends on how we interpret what had occurred.  Typical was the situation of the middle-aged digital content-creator. She was worried if her marketing firm was planning a reduction-in-force and, if so, would she be among those cut. A friend recommended she have a Tarot reading.  As we started her first-ever reading, in a state of great agitation, she asked me her "fate." When I told her "I don't know," she became irate.  Then I explained I could only discern what was going on around her. She

Your Tarot Reader, Your Confidant (unfortunately)

The old adage was: You are blessed if you have a handful of friends. Well, as Psychology Today explains, that blessing has become rare. For adults it's becoming too difficult to develop close friendships. A major reason why is that with adulthood come responsibilities. Work eats up so much time in the 21st century. Then there are all the worries, especially with crime, addictions, and contagious diseasers. In addition, unlike the good old days in college, trust is less.  So, we Tarot readers have drifted into the frienship space. So many of the sessions are filled with clients' disclosure. Yes, the kind of material shared in youth with trusted friends. That triggers the questions. Together, we focus on the past, present, and future.  On that mini journey the Three of Cups usually comes up. That signals joy. Interestingly exuding such joy can itself attract friends. Could that mean we Tartot readers lose them as clients? Sure. But since the world is so filled with the friendle

America's Epidemic of Self-Hate: Self-Deprecating Humor Plays into That

"My self deprecating humor can sometimes be self put downs. It’s unnecessary. Example: 'What do you do for work? Oh, I’m just a PPT monkey.' How do you make sure you’re being humble but also confident in your abilities?"  - Post on Fishbowl Consulting, February 2023. Here is the  thread. At this time when we are in a state of extreme economic angst it is wise to steer clear of injecting satire about yourself. Your objective may be to sidestep coming across as arrogant. The outcome, though, could be to tarnish your personal brand. Your negative self-assessment can be taken literally. To begin with, humor in itself always involves risk. A major reason why is that the comic is subjective. One person's funny can be offensive to another. Or t just does not seem to make any sense. Most schools of public relations warn about the ambiguity. Not that a professional interaction has to be heavy. But it could avoid misunderstandings if it doesn't play around with fact-b

You Do This Because I Said So - As Power Circles Back to Management, Wisdom of the Hierophant Card

"I have no idea what is really going on at work." That's a lament I often hear before I begin a Tarot reading. The clients are in emotional turmoil. They can't size up what is going on "behind the curtain" at their job or a contract assignment with an organization. No surprise, the  Hierophant card  will pop up. Embedded in that card is the message of conformity. Yes, it'a about sticking with the rules. Embracing what is - even if you don't understand it.  Of course, this wisdom doesn't apply for whistleblowers. See wrong? Decide if you want to take on the multi-dimensional risk of reporting it.  One factor driving the lack of transparency in work life is that even the leadership doesn't know what to do in such volatile times with way too many unknowns. They are winging it, the smart ones ready to change strategies and tactics on a dime.  Another factor is that power has returned to the top layers of the organization. It's back to old-f

Valentine's Day 2023 - Tarot's The Lovers Card and Opportunity to Break Generational Cycles of Dysfunction

" ... a lot of us, at least until we know different, choose lovers based on learned relationship dynamics." - Chapter "The Lovers" in 2021 book TAROT FOR CHANGE , By Jessica Dore The intensity of romance, especially the inherent pain, can open us to look at how we approach relationships. Most, if not all of that, circles back to what went down in our family of origin. You bet, we bring that into how we think and behave in the close relationships we form. That kind of analysis can provide the insight to unlearn dysfunctional patterns. For example, when hurt, our families might have withdrawn into spiteful silence. Of course, that poisons the connections and can harden into lingering resentments. After being disappointed by my father one Christmas eve, my mother took refuge in her usual: not talking. A pall was thrown over the holiday.  In contrast, we can make it our mission to talk out the pain. The best Valentine's Day gift to those we treasure is to be willi

All That Trouble - Fixing It May Require an Inside Job

"There is so much trouble in work." That's what a middle-aged advertising executive blurted out when he introduced himself to me for a Tarot reading.  Sure, advertising, especially digital, has been hit hard by cutbacks in spending by the usual suspects. But where there is so much trouble  there is usually something spiritually off within that person.  The term for the connection between what's going on externally and what's the state of being internally is  Synchronicity   Student of Sigmund Freud who broke away from those teachings - Carl Jung - coined that term. When treating patients in emotional distress Jung observed that their lives typically were in disorder. That is, human beings project what is going on inside them onto the world. Of course, in the process people can be harmed. So can the workplace. Interestingly, so could pets, who are psychic. Fixing the external mess begins with healing the insides. That is deep inner work. A Tarot card for that is th

Professions Wiped Out By AI - Yes, the Technology Can Develop Psychic Abilities, Poof Goes My Work Reading the Tarot

What has quickly overshadowed narratives about the commercial benefits of AI has been the fear of how it can eliminate jobs.  The latest about that: Yahoo Finance fingers these lines of work as most vulnerable: Customer Service. Translation.  (Good-bye also will for the university professors teaching X as a second or third language. Soon enough the cameras will pan on the AI chatbots at the UN. Report Writing. Content Creation . (The number is already out there. 90% of online content will be produced by AI chatbot by 2025.) I add:  Preparation of material related to job search.   MIT researchers found that in improving resumes AI produced better results than did humans. The metrics ranged from job offers to higher compensation. Here is the article I published on the findings in  O'Dwyer's Public Relations . It's not hyperbolic to say that no industry is off-limits for AI-intrusion. Personal care, for instance, already uses robots. And even some of the mos

Tarot's Wheel of Fortune Card Is Coming Up A Lot

"You were doing something the old way because the old way let you avoid things that scared you."  - From Chapter "Wheel of Fortune" in 2021 book  TAROT FOR CHANGE  by Jessica Dore   Anxiety about everything is what we are experiencing. So, it's predictable that the Wheel of Fortune card is popping up so often in Tarot readings. The message of that major arcana card is two-fold: Change is inevitable, whether you welcome it or not.   You have no choice but to go along with it. Not going along with it means not managing the process. It manages you, without your input. The wrench in the works is usually fear. We are scared to let go of what we know, what we do, and how we do it.    How to shake off the terrors?    The first step is to let go of the illusion of certainty. It's never there. What we assume is a form of certainty - our present MO - is really just reviewing the past. The past is in a cement block of time that we ca

ChatGPT - Will That Be the End of the Sacredness of Language?

Words are sacred. At least some of them. That's what late crooner Leonard Cohen is quoted as saying in the 2022 documentary "Hallelujah.” His background is Jewish culture. In that way of interpreting human existence, language is sacred. The name of the divine being was not allowed to be uttered, for example. But what will happen to the ethos of sacredness now that the OpenAI’s ChatGPT will be taking over text? It is predicted that by 2025 it will generate 90% of online content. However, the good news in this angst about words is that there are still safe harbors for language to be approached as what should be treated with reverence. Among them, of course, are religions and spiritual centers. In addition, the Tarot, which The New York Times salutes as a mystical tool for self-awareness, comes from a tradition of the non-worldly. Its mode of messaging is transcendental. You can introduce yourself to that linguistic system by reading “Tarot for Change,” by Jessica Do

Valentine's Day 2023 - It's Not About Love

So many holidays in America have lost meaning. Those include Christmas.  But Valentine's Day continues to have profound emotional pull power. How we value and need relationships, especially in these chaotic times. So - there are no coincidences in the Tarot - The Lovers card is coming up frequently these days. Essentially that's about learning lessons from searching for and navigating those kinds of connections.  In that journey what I recommend to clients is to leave behind the concept of "love." Instead replace it with more concrete terminology such as "caring."  Does the person I am developing a relationship with care about me?  Of course, that is signaled in so many ways. At the top of the list is not making decisions, even as simple as where to take a walk or a run, unilaterally.  After all connecting means getting out of the self. Unfortunately, the inability to do that has become an epidemic. The first step to take the leap into a shared reality? Dee

The Nostalgia Seduction - Tarot's Six Of Cups

During a Tarot reading about a lost love who returns the Six of Cups card usually pops up. That's the nostalgia card. It conjures up warm and fuzzy memories of pleasure and safety. And, it warns that the intrusion of that force field on a current relationship can be misleading. In the "Mad Men" episode of the Kodak Carousel pitch, Don Draper gives his iconic slide show about the power of nostalgia.  In real life currently with so much upheavel the pull of that can be seductive in itself. What human beings interpret as "love" could be simply a yearning for a known that was filled with satisfaction.  It can also be experienced as remembered happiness in a job, geographical location such as their college town, or even a specific house. Regarding the latter, boomers have been considering purchasing their childhood brick and mortar to bring them comfort in the present.  The message from the Six of Cup is: Filter out that feeling from what are the now realities.
