A Cancer Death in Rhode Island, The Stamford, CT Fatal Christmas Fire - Not Moving On, Instead Moving Forward

There is the myth of moving on. That assumes that parts of a life lived can be left behind, sort of like emotional and spiritual garbage.

No, we really don't want that. Every bit of life has extreme value. Otherwise evolution wouldn't have had preserving memory.

In an interview with me, John Tarantino, who had lost his wife Patrice to cancer, replaces that concept with "moving forward." He celebrated that in the Ted Talk "Redemption Stories" which has almost 20 million views. To make the death mean something, Tarantino donated the proceeds from selling the family house and Patrice's life insurance policy to cancer research. In addition to his legal practice, he  has become the chief executive officer of an oncology firm. Tarantino proudly gushes that he now bunks in a small apartment in Rhode Island.

In the Tarot that ability to transform the past into a platform for who you are becoming is symbolized by the Eight of Cups. In the Tarot, cups stand for emotion. The mountains for challenge. The Eight of Cups is a card with plenty of nuance - a mixture of sadness, hope and the need to put together a new direction. And we Tarot readers frequently pull it for those who will be entering a period of transition.

That is usually a journey we are pushed to navigate. Every holiday season since 2011, those of us who had been in Stamford, Connecticut Christmas morning bear witness to the resilience of Madonna Badger. We woke up to find out that during the night a fire in her home took the lives of her three young daughters and her parents. Not long afterward the children's father, Badger's former husband, died of heart-related problems. She traveled out west for therapy.

What was the "forward" for Badger had been re-embracing her career in advertising and marrying a long-term friend. Her agency wins myriad rewards. The ideas are so fresh - and effective. In 2016, she organized a campaign to prevent females from becoming sex objects in advertising. That is in memory of her three daughters.

In Tarot reading sessions during this season so many come struggling to grasp onto how they can move forward in the new year. Yet, the answer is so basic: Get out of yourself. That opens a pathway to possibility.
