Embrace Reality: You Bet, It's Tough Landing First Job

"No one told me it would be this hard to find a 'real' job."

That's what a member of the Class of 2022, who had majored in business, blurted out at the get-go of a Tarot reading.

My response:

"Congratulations, you accept what is. And that 'is' is two-fold 1) The first job was usually hard to land and 2) That's a lot tougher post-Covid now that businesses are shedding workers and focused on cost-efficiency."

I added that they could pick up plenty of job-search strategies by clicking on several times a day Reddit Career Guidance. It is free, continually brought up-to-date and has posters who really care about you. It will direct you to other subreddit resources such as for resumes.

Meanwhile, during that hunt for the "real job" grab just about anything that pays. Otherwise you will give off the wrong signals about your ability to parachute into a job and know how to comport yourself in a work setting. Also, there is the possibility that the skills learned can be leveraged into a career not planned.

During the financial meltdown of 2008 - 2009 unemployed new law graduates I coached who did take on survival jobs often stayed in those industries. For example, one leasing agent found a position in compliance in the corporate office. That is, when the economy began recovering.

I love one Zen saying: Clear Thinking, Don't Know. Use your economic common sense about bringing in income. It's no telling what doors that will open. Ditch the vision you had in college of the work you would be doing. Be receptive to the opportunity which could be coming at you.
