You Do This Because I Said So - As Power Circles Back to Management, Wisdom of the Hierophant Card

"I have no idea what is really going on at work."

That's a lament I often hear before I begin a Tarot reading. The clients are in emotional turmoil. They can't size up what is going on "behind the curtain" at their job or a contract assignment with an organization.

No surprise, the Hierophant card will pop up. Embedded in that card is the message of conformity. Yes, it'a about sticking with the rules. Embracing what is - even if you don't understand it.

Of course, this wisdom doesn't apply for whistleblowers. See wrong? Decide if you want to take on the multi-dimensional risk of reporting it.

One factor driving the lack of transparency in work life is that even the leadership doesn't know what to do in such volatile times with way too many unknowns. They are winging it, the smart ones ready to change strategies and tactics on a dime.

Another factor is that power has returned to the top layers of the organization. It's back to old-fashioned values of: You do it because I say to do it. Yes, it's terribly parental and rigid but it is what it is if you want to keep the job or the contract assignment. At least for right now.

Some Tarot clients who can't align with the return of the old order have launched mini businesses. Those bring in enough to make a good living. They have quit their day jobs or soon plan to do that.

In addition, an option for tolerating what some clients label "the divine right of kings" current way of managing has been picking up gig work. Embracing multiple sources of income gives them an emotional hedge for having relatively no say at work. If it comes to not being able to "take it," many could exit and make it for a while through gigs. They range from online tutoring to delivering pizza.

Takeaway: Figure out what organizational culture you can live with and those you can't operate in without damaging your mental health.
