The Tarot Is Not About Fortune-Telling

Those who believe in the mystical power of the Tarot come not for fortune-telling.

Instead they decide to participate in a Tarot reading in order gain insight into what could be. And then, if they are determined, they can strive to change that.

There is no such thing as "destiny." And it is the human being, not some external force field we think of as The Universe, who shapes the present and the future.

As for the past, as the Five of Cups messages, its impact depends on how we interpret what had occurred.

Typical was the situation of the middle-aged digital content-creator. She was worried if her marketing firm was planning a reduction-in-force and, if so, would she be among those cut. A friend recommended she have a Tarot reading.

As we started her first-ever reading, in a state of great agitation, she asked me her "fate." When I told her "I don't know," she became irate.

Then I explained I could only discern what was going on around her. She relaxed when I described the pockets of darkness and those of lightness at the agency. Currently I saw her cowering in the darkness. Of course, that made her a target for termination.

Next, we struggled together to pinpoint how she could navigate from there to a position in which she would be perceived as an asset. Among the suggestions which came through the Tarot was to bring in new business. Yes, she had a relative who needed digital marketing assistance.

The woman's job was saved. But the agency itself continued on a downward trajectory. In her Tarot reading 16 months later what came up was The Walking Away card - Eight of Cups. We both agreed she should look for a job in a firm which was growing.

A useful source for learning what the Tarot can and cannot do is the 2021 book "Tarot for Change" by Jessical Dore.

A simple introduction for how to interpret Tarot cards is "Kitchen Table Tarot" by Melissa Cynova. Since it had been published in 2017, it has become a classic for those beginning their journey to understand this tool which dates back to the 14th century.

And, here is the 2021 article in The New York Times which salutes the Tarot as a medium for self-awareness.
