Research on mirror neurons documented that built into humans is the capacity for empathy. Our neighbor loses a child. Spontaneously we weep with them.  But empathy, just like so many human traits, can turn toxic. The family of the unemployed software developer provides praise for their talents and even throws in financial support. In time, though, if that eventually doesn't shift into pragmatism about the declining market for that skill the period without professional work can harden into chronic unemployment. The raised horse's foot indicates that's what you're moving toward. And it'll be occurring soon.  But, as in all the tarot cards, the dynamic is about letting go of what has been. When it involves a necessary career shift that means leaving behind who you used to. Otherwise, the transformation can't take place. "I took a pay cut." That's what a client told me - sheepishly. It was obvious they still hadn't absorbed that not all professional moves are upward - be it in compensation, title or responsibility. What that happens to you  - a haircut on your salary - it can seem the end of the world. You don't want anyone to provide you "perspective." That perspective is usually is delivered in the form of a macro view. For example, Yahoo Finance reports: "Nearly a quarter of managers who switched employers in 2024 saw a pay drop ... Almost 1 in 3 managers who switched to a non-manager job at a new employer saw their pay decline." So? To both your wallet and your sense of a professional sense those numbers are irrelevant. Knowledge workers are dropping like flies. They are being laid off or fired. And those jobs and contract assignments are probably not coming back. Too many have nowhere to go.  Those who come to me for tarot readings or intuitive career coaching  tend to be full of regret about the decisions they had made. They "confess" that: They should have done their graduate studies in something more marketable. Instead of leaving Big Law for a government job they might have just sucked up the lack of WLB.   Maybe it's because the workplace is increasingly stressful. Maybe it's a sign of our lonely times. In tarot readings what I'm hearing more and more about are the toil and trouble of being an office spouse.  Essentially the work husband or the work wife provides support on many levels.  Unfortunately, lines often get blurred. There's the mental distraction of wondering: What does he/she really think of me? "I didn't go to college." That's the poignant "confession" made so often during tarot readings. Work as vocation. Not just a job. From the days when the Puritans were creating the most powerful economy in the world, we have approached what we do to earn a living as almost a sacred ritual. In Leaders Magazine , the head of Paul Weiss Brad Karp describes the law firm as "purpose driven."
