Toxic Empathy - That Will Doom You to Chronic Unemployment
Research on mirror neurons documented that built into humans is the capacity for empathy. Our neighbor loses a child. Spontaneously we weep with them.
But empathy, just like so many human traits, can turn toxic. The family of the unemployed software developer provides praise for their talents and even throws in financial support. In time, though, if that eventually doesn't shift into pragmatism about the declining market for that skill the period without professional work can harden into chronic unemployment.
In this new order of things about how to make a living professional anonymous networks Blind, Glassdoor, Fishbowl and Reddit frequently err on the side of excess compassion. Those in knowledge fields which are contracting or even being eliminated post their angst about losing a job or contract position.
Sure, there should be commiserating with how awful such an experience is. But quickly, if the input is to be helpful, there has to be the leap to discussing the realities of having a skill set less and less in demand, how some of that can be made marketable for the Next and providing concrete recommendations for work opportunities.
In addition to software developers, content-creators, marketers, middle managers, pre-AI techies, graphic designers and media relations pros have already bumped up against the brutal law of supply and demand. Those who reset so that they could continue earning a decent income were those who received straight talk. Not excess empathy.
The knowledge field which could soon enough start reconfiguring because of AI is the practice of law. Even such a complex discipline can be operated, in part, with AI products.
In the international edition of Law.com, the chair of law firm Paul Weiss Brad Karp gives it straight to young lawyers about the impact of AI on hiring and retention:
"Over time, I believe we will see junior associates supplemented, if not significantly replaced, by technologists and data scientists ... We will see more and more work come to be characterized as commoditized ... "
Karp adds that AI products are already being used throughout the practices at the firm. He states that instead of providing a timeline when the shift will take place. Obviously, you can connect the dots.
The tone and content are matter-of-fact. That's exactly what those considering investing in a career in law need. Not empathy. According to 2025 figures, the average cost of law school for three years - ranging from tuition to living expenses - ranges from $160,000 to $250,000. An entrepreneurial college senior at an Ivy deciding against law school can produce tee-shirts with the slogan: Brad Karp Just Saved Me $250k.
The tarot is about the clarity to get to a solution for your employment transition. The compassion isn't directed at comfort. The distress you're in can motivate. The empathy serves to restore your self-confidence so you can move right along.
