Pain Is a Terrible Thing to Waste - Tarot's The Magician Card

"The act of taking something you may have once believed to hold little value - like grief, rage, despair, social anxiety - and using it to move toward something precious is a kind of modern-day alchemy." - In the Chapter "The Magician" in 2021 book TAROT FOR CHANGE by Jessica Dore.

In the happy-clappy ethos of America we are boxed into assuming pain is bad. Yet, as we know from our own experience, frequently over and over again, the negative is usually the needed platform for positive change.

Litigation, for example, is expensive, stressful, and unpredictable in its outcome. Those gender discrimination lawsuits such as "Chen-Oster v Goldman Sachs" wouldn't have been filed unless many women (the plaintiff class includes about 1,300 females) were traumatized by alleged inequitable treatment. This coming June "Chen-Oster" is going to trial. It could be a game-changer in gender policies in the workplace.

The challenge is to embrace the reality of the bad and sit with it long enough to make decisions about solutions.

The alternative is to run. The directions flight takes ranges from substance abuse to isolation to quitting. About the latter, that is not panning out as such an effective fix. The Muse found that 72% of those who left jobs had job-changers' remorse. Suppose they had spotted a silver lining in what was scary, disappointing, seemed unfair, and could even have been downright toxic?

At one of the worst of times for Disney, Bob Chapek became CEO. Pile on that he initially made some very controversial ESG decisions. The media jumped all over him.

But Chapek seemed to leverage those negatives to make it his business to step outside the shadow of the previous charismatic CEO Bob Iger. He made his own bold decisions such as raising streaming pricing. The board renewed his contract and Disney's financal performance is one of growth. Without the adversity Chapek might have been nothing but an Iger clone. And Disney might have wound up losing its magic and being frozen in time.

Takeaway from The Magician Card: Pain is a terrible thing to waste.
