We Are All Paul Weiss - And Now We Are Different

 Paul Weiss has been the tipping point. 

The Executive Order by the current administration - the third issued - got to us. How vulnerable we all are to power. Forget the grade school lessons about what America is about. Forget how university deans caved during our counterculture protests.  Yes, and forget "rights"  as being sacred.

Here's what we now know. The key driven in that EO was that a lawyer who had been a partner at Paul Weiss years ago - Mark Pomerantz - had landed on the US President's enemies list. Of course there were other things about Paul Weiss, such as its mission for diversity, which didn't sit well with MAGA ideology. But that stuff probably was small potatoes. Pomerantz was the trouble spot.

How obvious it became: We are all Paul Weiss. 

Conversations I have with tarot-card clients, what I read in the media and what's turning up on professional anonymous networks Reddit and Fishbowl scream one message: Everyone can be a target for political punishment for whatever. During the President's DOJ speech it was made explicit that prison could be on the table as a penalty. How many of us would make it through one night in prison? 

Traditional rules are out the window.  And the new ones have been made retroactive. Pomerantz has nothing to do in the present with Paul Weiss. And what he had done was, at one time, considered legal and moral actions. Yeah, Pomerantz had been one of the good guys.

The Death card in the tarot captures where we are right now, as of result of that tipping point.

Despite that the "B" movies stage the Death card, it has nothing to do with a physical death. It symbolizes irreversible change and, whether we like it or not, we are now different. 

Different how? We haven't processed it yet, have we ...

But I have a hunch it's about the willingness to see what is. Overnight we seem to have shaken off the platitudes about what we are supposed to see. Also, poof, gone is any residue of Americana innocence. The world, it turns out, is not a safe place. Did the brilliant minds at Paul Weiss assume that excellence in their work would protect them from an EO kind of attack?
