Manifesting that Paul Weiss Has the Universe in Its Corner

The Trump administration's Executive Order, predictably, has delivered a negative impact to the business of law firm Paul Weiss. According to iconoclast conservative Steve Bannon that's exactly the administration's intention.  

On the Real America's Voice's War Room Bannon said:

" ... he's [Donald Trump] going to put those law firms out of business. Let me repeat this. There's major law firms ... what we are trying to do is put you out of business and bankrupt you. Just so you understand it."

Today, reports Bloomberg Law News:

"An executive [Steven Schwartz] facing federal bribery charges fired his lawyers [Ted Wells and Roberto Finzi] at Paul Weiss days after President Donald Trump targeted the firm in an executive order."

The case, filed by the Department of Justice, is "USA v Colburn, et al." Allegedly Schwartz, when a former senior official at Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp, made a "pay off" in India relating to the construction of an office park.

As quoted by Bloomberg Law, Paul Weiss lawyers stated in a court filing: 

“Mr. Schwartz is concerned that the firm’s continued representation of him may negatively affect his ability to obtain a favorable review of his case, or, due to the Executive Order, otherwise create potential conflicts of interest as between Mr. Schwartz and Paul, Weiss, that Mr. Schwartz is not prepared to waive..."

 Obviously, as has happened to Perkins Coie, which also had been hit with an EO, this development not only represents the loss of a client account. Also it could send a message to other clients and prospects that they should review whether or not to do business with Paul Weiss. 

As watchers of this drama analyze, it's almost irrelevant what the courts themselves rule about the legality of the EO. Perkins Coie received temporary injunctive relief from parts of the EO. However, the clients which left are still unlikely to return. Prospects can approach other excellent law firms to handle their legal issues. It could take years for Perkins Coie to rebuild the business.
