Groundlessness - But They Told Us to Keep Our Feet on the Ground
Floating inches, maybe feet off the ground capitalism planted us on. That's "groundlessness." Sometimes it's achieved during deep mediation, as tonight at the Buddhist temple. Or, just in desperation amid so much uncertainty.
And that's the magical state of being open to a fresh look at the overwhelm. There's a letting go. In the tarot that's symbolized by The Chariot card.
And the majority of suffering human beings coming to me for a tarot reading have been caught up chasing after jobs which no longer exist. Embedded in relationships which they've long ago outgrown. Spending money on a lifestyle which brings stress, not joy.
Another way of understanding groundlessness is the "sacred pause." Caught in a situation which we can't control or not being able to get a handle on what's happening, we stop. We back off from strategic planning, with lots of goal-setting.
How does that look in concrete terms? The 50-year-old who can no longer find a job in their field stops applying. Instead, they grab work, any work. Income comes in. So does their confidence. They're out of isolation. Started are the AH-HAs about other ways they earn a good living again.
Post-9/11, my industry collapsed. I lost my business, nest egg and mind. My conditioning screamed at me to figure out how to put together another homerun. Cognitive therapist Amy Karnilowicz essentially gave me "permission" to take the sacred pause. Float. Be groundless for a while.
I applied for and was hired on the spot for a security guard contract position at a Big Box. That led to a full-time one with benefits. Within about 13 months I had put together the beginnings of a digital marketing enterprise. Had I gone for the Big Score I probably wound have wound up homeless.
