Don't Expect Compassion - The Sidley Biter and More
Values are fragile entities. As a tarot reader I'm picking up on compassion falling off a cliff. With so much employment uncertainty, inflation and the disruptions of Generative AI, human beings are withdrawing into themselves. The mindsets are self-care, not caring much about others.
Predictably the story of the law student doing a lucrative internship at Sidley law firm who probably has risked an entire career has become a joke. Well, it's been confirmed that they were a biter. Yes, the teeth kind. Not a hustler after opportunity.
A rare bit of posting on Reddit by someone who works at Sidley requests empathy for a human being who will be caught up in the consequences of bad behavior. That plea probably won't get very far.
The same applies to other human beings on the wrong side of the economy.
In a 12-step club, for example, there's growing tension about the willingness to allow the homeless hang out. Their peculiar conduct has already reduced attendance at meetings. That lowers the amount of donations and those funds are needed to keep the lights on. On the other hand, some contend that if shut out those homeless lose their shot at maintaining sobriety. I have a hunch the Nays will have it.
A savvy politico Donald Trump sized up empathy burnout and leveraged that opportunity to eradicate progressive programs and be positioned as a hero.
Meanwhile, the Sidley biter caper siphons attention from the controversial deals nine law firms, ranging from Skadden to Paul Weiss, made with the Trump administration.
Thriving in difficult times starts from the inside.
