"Revisions" - Do Them with Small Edits

For years, before I conducted paid readings of the mystical tarot, I instructed writing at the Universities of Michigan, Pittsburgh and Connecticut. That's where I got down cold the principle I use in helping the suffering through the tarot: When revising, do small edits. In writing it's the revision of content. In life that could include revisions in relationships, behavior on the job or approach to wellness.

American Buddhist nun Pema Chodron reinforces that wisdom of taking it slow. Her classic guide is the book "Start Where You Are."

The essence of successful change is this: Focus on a few things that will give you quick wins. For instance, instead of having the grandiose goal of being as socially skilled as Disney's Bob Iger, still-in-there as a politico Barack Obama or Paul Weiss law firm's Brad Karp, be determined to do only one thing better.

That could be to think before you speak. Pause a moment. What comes out might not be silver-tongued (at least not yet), but you'll discover less and less conflict in relationships. Nothing succeeds like success. You'll be highly motivated to take on other things to do better. Soon enough you'll be delivering TedTalks.

Now, back to writing, which is skill you need in applying for jobs, creating reports (even if you derive the material from ChatGPT, posting on social and self-publishing such as on Substack and much more. The students I had to "slow down" on the rush to revise their essays were the most talented. But, they manifested themselves as the next Gabriel Sherman, Joan Didion or David Brooks. However, getting to that place takes more than talent. It takes practice practice practice. If they didn't start where they were and slowly improve aspects of their writing, they would wind up giving up.

And that's exactly what those in a hurry to reset their life wind up doing: giving up. Then they default into regret. That's symbolized in the tarot by the Five of Cups - the Spilled Milk card.

Instead, revisions can be filled with joy that you're making progress.
