"Baby Girl" - About Being Human, From Masochistic Desires to Kinky Power

"If  'that' went on at my company, the CEO would be out."

That's what a client for a tarot reading veered off on a tangent to say about the film released today "Baby Girl." The plot focuses on a masochistic office romance between tech founder and CEO Romy and an intern Samuel who torments her. The cruelty extends to his bringing to her party a date from the office. Romy falls apart.

Many reviewers stick with the meme of the age difference. But the romance is simply a vehicle about what it is to be human.

Enter Sigmund Freud, whom few critics mention. It was Freud who made explicit the fundamental self-destructiveness of humans.

Romy represents just the tip of the iceberg. Samuel could have been murdered by the husband Jacob. He is playing with fire. The daughter Isabel risks her committed relationship with lover Mary by a kissy flirtation with another women. Esme, Romy's assistant, risks being offed by attempting to blackmail the boss, which happens all the time. Fix the brakes on the car.

Another meme is kinky power. The blatant issue of the power of title versus that of sexual seduction is featured, in an upside-down way.

There also is the supposed power of corporate rhetoric. Esme spouts it about opportunity for women in the organization when she gets that promotion she was after. We certainly heard that a lot during the heyday of DEI. But, even then we rolled our eyes. The Democrats shot themselves in the foot with such an obsession.

In addition, there is the power of success symbols. At one time back in the 20th century that included "dress for success." Romy sports success attire. And note she is no Hillary Clinton in pantsuits. No, she showcases those long muscled legs. The big house in which she entertains frequently is another symbol. So are the botox treatments.

How about the intuitive power of Samuel. He can size up people and he does a splendid job picking up on Romy's vulnerabilities.

Then there is a power of love. That wins out. The self-absorbed daughter Isabel takes a leap out of herself and brings the parents back together as a family.

Like this film, tarot readings are about accepting our shadow side and taming it. Along the way there must be self-forgiveness. In time, Romy, I predict, will be able to understand what happened and make peace with it. The power of film is that the characters live on in our collective consciousness.
