The Pragmatism of the Tarot - Unwelcome Job-Search Realities
I frame the recommendation gently. But essentially it is: A little less spirituality and a lot more focus on the approach of your job search and how you are creating your resumes, cover letters and LinkedIn profile. That's what I tell clients for my tarot services.
In this chaotic time for employment it would be a disservice to clients not to be pragmatic. During 2024 there has been a significant shift from calls for relationship guidance to requests for insight about employment security.
The outlook for getting, holding and moving on to better jobs keeps bifurcating. In 2025 I anticipate a continuation of the trend, documented by MSN, that hiring in the six-figure job category will be stagnant. In contrast, it will be okay or even growing in the lower-earning slots.
That trend is showing up in my tarot readings. For example, the Eight of Cups (Walking Away) card frequently appears.
The clients and I then probe the implications.
For example, should they downsize their compensation expectations if they are determined to get back to work when unemployed? Often that entails modifying job-search materials so not to come across as overqualified. MSN reports that middle-aged Lynda Namey removed her doctorate from her resume to not scare off those hiring. Since 2008, I have been advocating purging advanced degrees beyond the BA/BS. The latter can still open doors and command a higher salary. Actually, not having it can knock you out of the box.
Another form of walking away is exiting a long-term career path. For example, in some sectors such as marketing you can "age out." The field is youth-oriented. In addition, hiring is down. For marketing, LinkedIn found, hiring has been off 23%. What about reskilling with a certification or licensing in a trade, personal care or healthcare?
A third form of walking away is to relocate from a HCOL (high cost of living) area to a LCOL (low cost of living) region. Reduced fixed expenses can give you more wiggle room in what kinds of work you can "afford" to accept. In addition, in that location the competition for work might not be as intense as in HCOL. Through platforms such as Freelance.com and Upwork you can apply for remote contract assignments. Your earnings will go further in LCOL. In this award-winning podcast I discuss freelancing after-50.
My prediction for 2025? On the job front it will continue to be a tough time. So, while hunting for full-time work with benefits, grab whatever brings in income. That could prevent financial disaster and help you hold on to your confidence.
