Still Working, But You Could Wind Up Homeless
"I have a job. But I am late on rent and credit cards payments."
Usually that poignant tale is told to me during a tarot reading by a person over-50 who can't make ends meet. That's even though they're working full-time. Most have lived their lives in locations which have become HCOL (high cost of living). One day, they're making it. Then they're not.
Their fear is this: becoming homeless. That's currently realistic. One in four of the homeless is age 55 or older. In 2024, homelessness surged 18%.
A radical solution but it is a solution is to pull up roots and relocate to a LCOL (low cost of living) area.
As I lay out in this article in "O'Dwyer's Public Relations," there is a broad range of LCOL options. They range from Tucson, Arizona where a studio apartment runs about $800 to neighborhoods in Birmingham, Alabama where the monthly nut is only about $400. In Youngstown, Ohio a large one-bedroom could go for under $700. Abroad in such nations such as Ecuador you can have access to a life of comfort for relative peanuts.
The first step toward some kind of financial stability is to research on the internet the cost of fixed expenses such as housing on the internet in a variety of locations. That can kick off with, for example, keying in "Youngstown, Ohio - Apartments for Rent" or "Cheap places to live in Arizona." The latter will come up with $500 a month in Dougalas or $400 in Nogales.
Your life? The ordeal of leaving routines and friends behind will be tough. But the ease-off of financial angst can make it worth it.
As for material possessions you can list them for sale on Craigslist. Key in, for instance, "Craigslist - Jersey City, New York." A menu including "for sale" will pop up. What doesn't sell you can relist as "free" and it probably will go. What doesn't can be donated to charity. What you want to keep can be transported with a rental such as from U-Haul, with the car hooked behind.
For just-in-time work there are gig platforms ranging from TaskRabbit to Freelance.com. Also there are the usual such as Indeed and LinkedIn. Craigslist also has a comprehensive jobs section, both for standard full-time and contract.
To make social contacts quickly in your new base of operations join a religious organization, a no-cost support group such as Emotional Anonymous and/or trade associations.
You have nothing to lose investing your time researching LCOL options.
