Vogue, Yes Vogue, Tells You How to Read Your Tarot Cards - Mysticism Goes Grassroots
Now it's glam Vogue which is introducing the mystical art of the Tarot to anyone determined to achieve self-awareness, insight and a handle on decision-making. Back in 2021, it was the respected The New York Times which had been a pioneer in bringing the Tarot to the mainstream.
Not so long ago, though, the Tarot was bunched in with other "woo-woo" practices as, well, way out there. Next Tuesday, at Cochise Toastmasters in Sierra Vista, Arizona, I am going to go retro: Explain how it had been in making the career shift four years ago from primarily business communications to Tarot reading. Essentially I was taking on as tough a rite of passage as going from being a protected student to the combat of the workplace. Or, so I thought.
I had assumed as I reset my brand in social networks such as LinkedIn and Facebook I would encounter disbelief and smirks. That only happened once. On a podcast interview the host edited out my discussion about my Tarot reading practice.
See, there are several realities unfolding. One is a disenchantment with the evidence-based ethos of the scientific age. In college we boomers were trained in the Scientific Method. Pop culture television shows ranging from "Perry Mason" to "Boston Legal" created a fascination with arguments about evidence. Real-life lawyers such as Boies Schiller's David Boies, Sanford Heisler's David Sanford and Paul Weiss' Brad Karp acquired the status of thought leaders and change agents.
The faith in much of that has mutated into distrust. So many of the "knowns" in medical science have been disproved or even found to represent cooked-up research. At the level of the highest court in America - The US Supreme Court - the conservative justices are being perceived by some as "cherry picking" the evidence.
In addition to the ending of the era of blind faith in rationalism, there is the jarring paradigm shift what it takes to get, hold and move on to better work. White collar professions are in not only a recession. There may be a permanent downsizing about how many knowledge workers are needed.
Those watchers of my transition to Tarot reading - everyone is always watching us - were in an analytical mode. Not judgmental. The focus was: Could I make a good living doing something beyond the white-collar professional-services box. And, should they also be exploring how they could put together a Next, if they lost their jobs or business?
A third factor is financial. The New York Post reports that New Yorkers are tending to ditch their therapists and opting for consulting with psychics. The driving force, as I see it, is not only perception of results. It's also about cost.
For those little bumps in the road which might initially generate big distress those in pain can pop into a Tarot reader for a one-card pull and that's that. It lasts 15 minutes and might bill at anywhere from a few bucks to a dollar for each minute. Therapy in NYC can run into the triple digits. No, Tarot readings aren't covered by insurance yet. But given current trends that could be in the future.
