Standing Up for Yourself - Few of You Will Land on Your Feet like Brittany Pietsch

 "They were playing around with my schedule. I had to stand up for myself."

That was what a client (identity masked) vented in a Tarot reading. A chill went down my psychic spine. They had, as we used to call it, "mouthed off." This was not the first time. Although I did not pick up that termination was imminent, it was a strong probability. They needed that job.

Even in boom times when employers chased talent and employees had the upper hand, it had been a negative to lash out to a superior (or even in the grapevine) in frustration As the old saying goes: "They" remember your bad days, not all your good ones.

Currently that could trigger losing the job. The employer mindset is "Do we need this worker?" It is the era of extreme cost-efficiency. Thousands, not hundreds, apply for most job openings. There is no shortage of those willing to take the job you experience as such an emotional or spiritual burden. That's just the reality right now. 

Meanwhile, on social those who need income from work read about former Cloudflare marketing employee Brittany Pietsch who stood up for herself. She recorded and posted how she was terminated. Well, Pietsch shares with us on LinkedIn that she did land on her feet. About three weeks ago she took a position at EQ.app. 

But, in my years of experience providing clarity about careers I know Pietsch is atypical. Those who stand up for themselves in counterproductive ways usually never recover career momentum. 

The major reason is two-fold: 1) It is unacceptable in the work setting and 2) They don't learn strategic ways to manage frustration and to right what they perceive as wrong.

Yes, There Are Content Workers - Many of Them Are Freelancers

Among them is Paul Chaney whose field is communications. On the all-important LinkedIn Profile , Chaney actually uses that term: freelancer . Not so long ago, those watching his back would have nudged him to go by the moniker "consultant." Recently, Chaney had me as a guest on a podcast about how the over-50 (who, of course, encounter so much ageism), can freelance. It received an award from Media Dimensions. The Long Half Life of The Feel-Good (from doing good)

The for-sales could have run on Craigslist for 16 more days.  Then came that Ah-Ha moment. Given the low prices you get for used furniture, even though in excellent condition, why not just donate the barely used innovative bed set, artsy storage chest/prism, snow-removal equipment and karma icons.  I knocked on a neighbor's door. When I described the goodies her face lit up. You bet, she said, her husband would be right down the stairs to bring up their new stuff.  Their five-year-old would tag along with some of her stuffed animals to place immediately in the chest.  That family is delighted. The glow spills over to me. And I need that as I continue to put together the logistics for relocating back to Sierra Vista, Arizona.
