Christine Blasey Ford, Idealist or Reckless? - What Do the Cards Say ...

The Tarot, documents The New York Times, brings self-awareness. That, in turn, can help determine our behavior. As one wise client for my Tarot readings put it, "No one gives a rat's ass what I think or feel. What they see is only my behavior."

In her memoir "One Way Back," the woman who spoke out against US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in September 2018 - Christine Blasey Ford - explains her behavior back then. And its grim aftermath (as if the latter was unexpected).

As many recall, in front of the US Senate and national television, Ford accused Kavanaugh of attempted sexual assault in 1982. Yes, that long ago. That was when they were in high school and he was drinking beer at a party.

She contends she was only coming forward at that late date because, given that he was going after the august responsibility of being a SCOTUS justice, it was her civic duty. After all didn't that reflect on his character?

However, many years ago Kavanaugh had been a clerk for SCOTUS Anthony Kennedy and, given that was a sign he was on the move in the legal world, wasn't it her civic duty way back then to report that supposed conduct? Also, come on, the American legal system treats the conduct of youth from a different perspective than it does adults? Most of us, fortunately. do change (for the better) from who we were in high school. The alleged misconduct of a teenager doesn't necessarily determine the character of the man.

Performing that civic duty opened the gates of hell for not only Ford but her family. The death threats drove them to bunk for a year in motels, not home. There was much more, she piles it on in "One Way Back."

A Tarot reading before Ford decided to testify about the alleged incident could have given her the awareness that such a decision could be reckless. And ineffective. Kavanaugh was confirmed 50 to 48, right along party lines, as expected.

In addition, Ford was downright arrogant. She refused the standard coaching. She also should have had her husband and children there in the room, as had Kavanaugh, but didn't. In terms of optics, that was also reckless.

Some speculate that by publishing this memoir Ford is inviting a defamation lawsuit from Kavanaugh. Given the fees billed by defense lawyers that also can be determined as, you got it, reckless. Her net worth is estimated at about $2 million. Peanuts in terms of a first-class defense.

Admittedly, civic duty is important in America.

There are protections for genuine whistle-blowers.

Law firms ranging from Jones Day to Paul, Weiss invest their best talent in pro bono assignments.

Businesses establish foundations to be good corporate citizens.

We rescue the stray dog on the highway and go out of our way to bring it to a shelter.

But how did Ford connect the dots on a civic responsibility between something that may or may not have happened in high school in 1982 between two young people and the career of a man with impressive credentials in 2018? From the get-go, what could all this have been really about then - and now?
