Tarot's Wheel of Fortune Card - It's How You Play It

Those who come for Tarot readings get scared when the Wheel of Fortune card comes up. And with good reason.

The Wheel of Fortune card signals change is coming, whether you like it or not. There will be plenty of that in 2024 as global volatility gallops on.

Most human beings don't absorb change easily, even if it is a good one. Evidence of that is the middle manager who gets promoted to the C-Suite and struggles with the fit. The message embedded in this card is that change is ongoing. The good, the bad, the mundane - all is transitory.

The trick, though, is to align your mindset with accepting that constant state of flux. The reward is great: You can ignore your enemies, critics and even the intrusive (but well-meaning) advice-givers who will make your temporary misfortune their business. The media is especially adept at that.

Even more importantly, if they do a gush about any of your good fortune, you can ignore that too. The highs can be as possibly dangerous as the lows. When the media was in-love with Disney CEO Bob Iger that might have blinded him to emerging problems. Now there is no ducking them and the media has not be kind to Iger.

The Wheel of Fortune card message is: Navigate what is the best you can. Another way of putting that is: It doesn't matter what happens, it's how you handle it. Insulate yourself from the noise around you.

No surprise, given the Wheel of Fortune, things keep changing at law firm Paul, Weiss. The Wheel of Fortune was turning in its favor with a jump upward in rankings for volume of M&A business, lateral hires of top talent of Private Equity lawyers in London and sustained business when many other firms were slow. Media outlets were gush.

Then, a darkening cloud moved over the Wheel. Another law firm - White & Castle - hired away the co-chair of M&A and Private Equity Taurie Zeitzer.

That delivers a hit to the Paul, Weiss brand. Competitors are likely gleeful. Maybe worse it could result in key accounts following Zeitzer to the new firm. In law firms, those accounts are big-ticket items.

Incidentally maybe Zeitzer hasn't absorbed this change, not quite yet. It seems strange that she hasn't (as of 1/6/24) brought up to date her LinkedIn Profile. Likewise, White & Case may be off its game on this one too. Although it posts a press release about her joining, her profile is not yet listed on its website. Zeitzer's profile is no longer on the Paul, Weiss website. In professional life, LinkedIn is everything. For law firms, their websites are important.

Time will tell what media outlets beyond Law.com and Reuters do with this development. Meanwhile for Paul, Weiss job number-one is to transcend this setback with good news about other facets of the business. Then positive coverage will return. That's how the Wheel of Fortune operates, if well-managed. You don't want to be on a downward trajectory for long.

It is a waste of psychic energy to fear the Wheel of Fortune. Change is inevitable. Then it's how you play that card.
