Meaning - Maybe We Don't Start That Search Early Enough ...
"You work hard throughout your childhood, maintain great academics, get in good schools, and find a good job, challenge yourself continously in job to grow and after doing this for few years you find everything is meaningless..." - Posted on Fishbowl Consulting, November 2, 2023
In Tarot readings I am finding that professionals start bumping into the meaning wall - and come away emotionally numb - when they are heading into their late 30s.
Until then they assumed meaning was in work. Wasn't it supposed to bring deep satisfaction to master the complex field of practicing law or serve mankind as a medical doctor.
By that time the infrastructure is usually in-place - lifestyle, family, mortgage as well as other forms of debt. If the answer is that their chosen career path is, well, meaningless, they could be caught between that awful state of being of stuckness and the difficulty of change. Recently in O'Dwyer's Public Relations I published an article on the ordeal of switching careers.
Unfortunately, the developmental systems tend to be structured to discourage youth from looking at meaning. In the expose of the Ivy League - Excellent Sheep - Yale instructor William Deresiewicz points out the focus of those years is primarily on professional success. Much anything else is treated as a distraction. The search is for what are the models of success. That ranges from what major to what persona.
That lock-in didn't start with Generation Z or Millennials or even Generation Y. The reality is that the collapse triggered by a lack of meaning happened earlier in a life.
Back when the first generation in America went to college en masse - we Boomers - the orthodoxy was to direct the mindset and behavior to make it into the college of our choice. No matter what issue came up the usual answer from authorities was: You will need that when you get to college. Or, you will find that out about yourself when you are in college.
And, yes, after-college there were myriad versions of The Big Chill. We Boomers were the First Therapy Generation in America. There is the old saying that most of that could have been worked through much of that with a close friend versus a therapist. But most of us didn't have enough of a sense of self to even try that out with a friend. No coincidence, we Boomers were also the First Careerist Generation in America. We didn't skip a beat: We went from One-Dimensional College to One-Dimensional Work.
In Tarot readings first I have to tutor self-forgiveness. Most are in despair that they had never stopped the train and asked what they were doing traveling in that specific direction.
The next step is a pragmatic assessment of options. That's where the Serenity Prayer comes in:
" ...grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference."
The third step is a resolution to not rush those they care about to get aboard any specific train. The message is that it is okay to experiment with different routes.
