Delusion Isn't "Crazy" - It Can Help You Hang on and Keep Going

In the 2018 survival film "Adrift" Tami is not only inspired to keep the disabled Hazana heading toward land. She even receives good advice such as spearing fish to have something to eat.

The source of that is her lover Richard. However, it's all delusion. Richard had been swept overboard during the 1983 hurricane Raymond and is dead. But the lesson is clear: Delusion can be a gift from the universe to overcome what our normal resources might not be up to. At least not at that time.

When Tami connects the dots and realizes there is no Richard she is ready to accept it. In this true story she does eventually keep doing enough right things to steer Hazana to a traffic lane of the ocean and is rescued by a ship. She goes on to have a long life of sailing.

It's downright unkind to pressure others to surrender a delusion. No one puts us mere mortals in charge of supposed truth. Actually, such nudging can be classified as "toxic."

In my Tarot readings my mission is to guide the suffering along the pathways to seeking relief. Part of that may be grasping onto what are illusions.

Typical is the professional whose employer has gone bankrupt and they are out of work. For a while they have to have confidence they will land a comparable job - quickly - and not much will change. That "platform" enables them to get from that point of shock to start putting together a realistic search for income - any kind. This is plenty of that as Knowledge Work is drying up. Generative AI will eliminate even more of that. Delusion can be a necessary bridge to the new normal in the white collar.

During that period of accepting what is there is no place for beating yourself up for "crazy thinking."

Without the capacity for illusion the beginnings of the human race would never have been able to leave the cave in the morning to hunt for supper with the assurance that they wouldn't become supper for what was out there.

Currently the sophisticated field of practicing law at Kirkland & Ellis, Cravath and Paul, Weiss requires enormous bravado about the ability to not only win but do that in a big way. When I do Tarot readings for lawyers part of that is unleashing self-confidence. We are our thoughts. The bible on that is Harvard Business School professor Rosabeth Kanter's book "Confidence: How Winning Streaks and Losing Streaks Begin and End."

In order to turn around troubled Disney CEO Bob Iger has to continue to believe in himself. However, there is a real possibility of a hostile takeover. No, Iger isn't "crazy" to keep up the struggle and be assured he will pull it off.
