Light a Candle, Look into the Flame - That's Meditation, for Such Troubled Times

"The Israel-Hamas clash threatens to spark other bloody battles, meaning it's now a coin toss whether a world war breaks out that includes the US and China, [hedge fund genius] Ray Dalio has warned." - Insider, October 13, 2023

Simultaneously JPMorgan Chase head Jamie Dimon warns that that the world "may be the most dangerous in decades."

A boomer, I recall stories my grandparents told about the old country. The one my grandmother kept repeating was this: How the women in the village cried when news was that WW2 had broken out. They knew their sons would be pulled out to the front and might not be coming back.

Now the undercurrent in America is that same collective sadness. We might go to war and this time it could be the war that disappears not only the youth in towns but the whole human race.

In my Tarot readings the surfacing distress is palpable, especially among those with children under-35 or husbands in the military. Some ask to learn how to meditate. That can be as simple as lighting a small white candle and looking into the flame for 10 minutes. Research shows that can generate the same serenity and insight as more formal kinds of meditation.

My grandparents never recovered from war in Europe. They brought that overcast with them to America. I wanted no part of that. There were Disney, Hallmark and Lassie who always came home. Currently I envy that childlike ability to filter out realities.
