Layoffs Described as "Taking Out the Trash" - But, What Can Happen After the Trash Is Taken Out ...

In Tarot readings I veer clients away from betting that some form of karma will do in the supposed "bad guys." Essentially I counsel to leave that task to the universe or spirit or angels and not waste energy with such a preoccupation.

However, it is likely that there are any number of unemployed lawyers who are calling on karma today to set straight a poster on Fishbowl Big Law:

"I am so tired of people at my firm (Ropes) complaining about 'layoffs' and 'stealths' on Fishbowl and even in real life. In my opinion, we took out the trash."

Readers of the post have already jumped in with criticism and dark wishes for the poster. However, it is equally arrogant to judge. Even the official legal system often does that badly, as we see with all the turn-overs of verdicts.

It isn't toxic positivity to shift attention to what can be praised - and leveraged as a model. In "This Is How You Grow After Trauma," Olivia Remes details the utility of what is perceived as negative events. High on that list is losing a job.

What's right up her alley is the news on Bloomberg Law about how the attorneys made jobless by the collapse of Dewey & LeBoeuf were resilient in their careers.

Meanwhile after a run of bad press law firm Paul Weiss is reinventing itself. The media has done a head-snapping shift in coverage. Currently it is permeated with a kind of awe for very recent moves by that law firm.

Those actions range from three surprise raids of its competitor Kirkland & Ellis to, in a slow period for many other law firms, bagging two major accounts. The clients are Google and Chevron. Now there is speculation that Paul Weiss could introduce the Non-Equity Partner tier. That could increase retention among junior lawyers. In addition, it has a track record for not taking out trash. Since the brutal recession following 9/11 it hasn't laid off.

In 1982, I was put out as trash by a midsized corporation. Yes, I was treated as such. That's how it goes here in the capitalistic dimension we call "life." Within three months I was hired by a Fortune 50 at $20k more.

I don't position that as a happy-clappy ending for a story of trauma. Rather, I mean it only as an example of  what is possible and even likely if what is considered negative becomes a platform for putting together a very different world view. For me it was to become more of a risk-taker in mapping a career path. Playing it safe got me in the trash bin.

No surprise in this era of increasing global layoffs The Fool card frequently comes up in the Tarot readings I do. The message of that card is: Have the confidence to take smart risks and know you can bounce back from what doesn't pan out as expected.
