Very Old-Fashioned: How to Get Jobs/Change Careers (even in tarot reading)

"Consulting firms are rethinking their strategy though - generic consultants have suffered lately. Jobs are going to specialists at the moment. Companies are paying $700 an hour for someone who truly knows GenAI - they are not paying $300 for a 3 year kid with an Ivy League degree." - Fshbowl Consulting, August 14, 2023

And, that's not only management consulting.

In law, the chase for specialists is where the recruiting and reward systems are at. Paul Weiss just poached a private equity specialist from Kirkland & Ellis in the London market. We have to assume big charm and big bucks were invested in that hiring.

Those who didn't serve a specialist type of internship in college don't have a crack at well-paying jobs. They tell all about the disappointment on Reddit Career Guidance.

And overall software developers are a dime a dozen with the exception of specialists. Those with generative AI experience can have their ticket punched just about anywhere.

Obviously employers want narrowly defined results now and produced just right. That entails specialists. With employee development an anachronism you have to  provide those skills already proven out with experience. It is a cliche that is a Catch-22. It takes experience to get even the first job or one involving career change. (Here is my article, published in O'Dwyer's Public Relations, on the challenges of transitioning to another line of work.)

But it is equally a cliche that free sells. For the experience you need, create a brilliant pitch about providing complimentary services (or products). That really does pan out.

When the speechwriting/ghostwriting market collapsed after the double whammy of Enron and 9/11, I shifted to beefing up my knowledge of direct marketing communications. To get the experience I went around knocking on doors in-person in Stamford, Connecticut of retailers and players in the entertainment industry.

Within several months my resume was jam-packed with the kind of credentials that landed me a full-time marketing communications job at an insurance firm. That stop-off (I'm a serial entrepreneur) I transformed into creating my own marketing communications boutique which I positioned and packacked as specializing in digital for financial and law firms.

Don't worry about your special expertise getting out-of-date. It will. So, you develop another area of extreme expertise. When communications became glutted I focused on my sideline gig in Tarot readings - that is spiritual guidance. For the experience in the specialized space of transition I provided complimentary readings to those over-50. Build that expertise and they will come ... Now communications is no longer the core competence.

Incidentally, this specialist orientation bleeds into college applications. When I had been coaching the personal essay recently the emphasis had been on highlighting a long-term interest. No market for the renaissance student in today's higher education. Youth has to get focused fast.
