Career Path for English Majors: Tarot Reader

With good reason youth has veered away from majoring in English. The number of those at Harvard had declined three-quarters in the 15-year period leading up to the pandemic. The return on the pricey investment in a college degree tends to be lousy for English majors. That is, if they even can land an entry-level Knowledge Economy job post-graduation.

However there is one career path wide open for them. That is: Tarot reader.

See, the Tarot is a visual medium embedded with symbolism requiring interpretation. That's right up the English major's alley. For example, the Seven of Pentacles visually depicts a man leaning on a hoe gazing at an abundant crop. Superimposed on that crop are seven pentacles which usually stand for business, financial security, professional success and whatever opens itself to interpretation.

What to make of all that in order to be useful to the client? That will depend 1) on the spiritual connection between the reader and the client and 2) how skilled in decoding symbolism the reader is. Of course, there are no absolutes in the continuum of interpretations.

Not only am I a former English major. I went on to the MA and Ph.D. in literature and language. Therefore, drilled into me is to dig around for layers and layers of meaning, patterns and memes. Incidentally, the universe was on my side and I was able to cash in that education for corporate ghostwriting/speechwriting. That was then. Later I applied that mindset and those skills into Tarot readings.

In my sideline of intuitive coaching I recommend to parents that their offspring not major in English. The tide against it is irreversible, documents Nathan Heller in The New Yorker. That's not primarily due to crass capitalism. More to the point are the impacts of technology, Heller explains.

Here is my experience. Instead of flopping back on the couch and poring over a printed text of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby," I do digital textual, audio, and video whatever. Soon enough technology in the form of generative AI will also kill off the English major's career path in writing. That skill will become analogous to English as a second language. That is, some will have to acquire it. Many others won’t. Those who "love" writing will do that essentially as a hobby.

Of course, a growing number of clients for Tarot readers seek insight - and hope - about their careers. What I interpret as their "ticket" is their ability to change. The greater that capacity the more successful they can become - and hold onto that. That's symbolized by the Eight of Cubs. Normally that's interpreted as The Walking Away Card. I prefer to read it as The Walking Toward Card.
