Tarot's Devil Card - Being Codependent Is The Devil You Know

 "I can't live without him/her."

That is one of the most common reasons human beings are in pain. At least that's my experience as a Tarot reader. The formal name for that suffering is "codependency."

Essentially it's the assumption - more like an obsession - that your entire sense of identity is shaped by another person.

That attachment could also be to an entity like work. Currently, those laid off on Wall Street by firms such as Goldman Sachs could be experiencing "withdrawal" from that force field of compulsive achievement. Interestingly some of those let go had recently been promoted. As a result their belief system could be in upheaval.

The Tarot card which symbolizes that state of being enslaved is The Devil.

Often those coming for a reading tend to be aware that they are "hooked" on externals for who they are and their self-worth. They know that they "collapse" if they don't hear from their significant other or the boss hasn't paid attention to them.

However, usually they don't know how to exit what has become a downright addiction. The primary reason is this: Such a sense of enslavement is the devil they know. Without being emotionally chained they fear they would vanish - literally. There would be no "they."

What I recommend are meditations and spells for the self-love process to kick in. Codependency is usually rooted in some version of self-hate.

A free resource is 12-step program Codependents AnonymousThere are both in-person meetings and online ones. Here is an introductory video about the self-help organization.

Of course there has been a flood of general information through books. Here are 10 which have received positive reviews.

Like alcoholism and gambling, being so dependent on someone or something external for a self of self as a human being can be a destructive addiction. As with all compulsions all could be lost.
