The Star Card - Taking the First Step Toward Hope

"Does this mean I will be famous?"

That's what a a college senior gleefully blurted during a Tarot reading. It was a one-card pull (with a second confirmation card). And there it was: the Star card.

"No. There’s something even better than becoming a celebrity."

That is what I had answered. Fame comes and goes. Meanwhile while it exists it typically makes you a target. The headline in an article in The Atlantic by Arthur C. Brooks screams: “To Be Happy, Hide From the Spotlight.”

The message of the Star card is this: hope. That is what human beings need to hang on to. And in the present global turmoil, especially economically, that seems increasingly elusive. For example, read the posts and the comments on professional anonymous network Reddit Jobs. Here is a recent one:

“I’ve been applying to jobs like crazy obviously, but other than that I have hardly left my house at all. The only time I get out during the day is to take my dog on a walk in the morning and in the evening. I find myself falling asleep throughout the day because I’m actively trying to avoid going out so I won’t spend any money right now. And for some reason, I’m totally exhausted even though I’m not really doing anything …”

Obviously this young person needs hope. Remember how that was guaranteed in the packaging labeled “the best years of our life.” What big dreams we were supposed to have and did. We were even breathless with excitement applying for jobs or graduate school or observing the deepening of a relationship. That was then. Here is the Reddit Jobs thread which chronicles lack of hope as new meme.

So, what is the first step back toward hope?

Essentially the Tarot, ranging from the Chariot card to the Emperor, is about surrendering to the reality that we have such little control. Once we get that down cold then we can focus on what can be changed. In short, instead of cursing the darkness we make the effort to find where there are sources of light.

For instance, in a search for work if there are no results with the usual, then you are willing to experiment with fresh strategies and tactics. Hope empowers you to do that. In a failing relationship, shift from regret about the past to developing new behaviors which could reset it.

Hope provides the belief that such an “investment” will pay off.

To put hope on a fast track, light a small white candle. Three times a day recite three times:

I can’t

Spirit [the Universe] can

I let it.

That can be your ongoing daily spiritual exercise. Build up that hope muscle.
