Hamlet - How Tarot Readings Could Have Prevented That Tragedy

"The [Tarot] cards allow us to safely see and understand the less palatable aspects of ourselves."

From Chapter "What Is Tarot?" in 2021 book TAROT FOR CHANGE by Jessica Dore.

We all have our dark side.

William Shakespeare called that reality "cankered in the grain."

Roman Catholicism labeled the condition "original sin."

In the workplace they position and package those traits as "weaknesses" and detail them in Proposals for Improvement of Performance.

All of that tends to make us push back on identifying and accepting our highly flawed nature. But if we don't leap into acceptance the consequences can include health problems.

That is because:

 1) We are repressing a natural part of our humanity.

And 2) We are not managing what typically triggers personal and professional ruin.

Had Hamlet accepted his own and others' imperfections he might not have wound up in such a downward spiral. Aren’t we all selfish screw-ups?

The same assessment might be applied to a more recent situation of a descent into reputational hell. That pertains to the financial genius who had co-founded private equity investment firm Apollo - Leon Black. Black seemed and still seems unable to size up himself and those he associated with in a realistic manner.

Mysticism creates the safety. The threat of introspection and being pounded with the “oughts” out there melts away.

That’s because mysticism connects us with another dimension. That's beyond the usual harsh human judgements about supposed absolute right and wrong, good and bad, effective and not effective.

Also, as the Ace cards in the Tarot guarantee, the Universe or Spirit has our backs. We are not alone in sorting out. There is also the extreme reward, as messaged by the Eight of Cubs, of all the unique lessons we had learned in the darkness. Aren't we blessed to have been gifted with that insight.

Think about this. Some contend that alcoholism is the disease of self-hate. Human beings destroy themselves with alcohol in order to push that down. For exactly that reason, the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, especially through Step 11, had made reaching out to a higher power a necessity in getting and staying sober. In that realm are total self-acceptance, self-forgiveness, and the capacity for change.

The initial step into mysticism and wellness can kick off with meditating a few minutes a day. One mantra could be: Guide me out of darkness. Another could be: Clear Thinking, Don’t Know.
