Tarot Readers and (top) Defense Lawyers Both Sell Hope - But Despair Is an Equally Brisk Seller

The mysticism of the Tarot cards is optimistic.

Okay, some cards such as the Moon carry warnings of darkness. But embedded in that message is reassurance of the ability to roll with whatever. Specifically it is the Sun card which symbolizes hope. And the World card salutes the victory of having overcome life’s difficulties, at least so far. Clients get to hear they are back on their way.

The Tarot is a platform for hope, no matter what. That’s one reason why Tarot readings are being selected for insight/healing by more and more people.

NPR salutes us Tarot readers as the new version of the traditional psychologist. And The New York Times documents Tarot readings as authentic tools for self-awareness and introspection. There is a lightness of being, which many forms of traditional therapy don’t provide. Clients are transported. In a sense they emerge from confusion or crisis more than whole. They are different.

Just like Tarot readers, defense lawyers also sell hope. At least the top ones. Clients frequently come in a state of high angst. All the negative scenarios swirl around in their heads. In a legal, business, and maybe even in a reputational sense, their hope is directly based on what defense lawyers can conjure. That’s exactly why they are willing to pay those high fees.

In fact, the best defense lawyers create their branding based on a track record for developing unique solutions to high-stakes problems.

Paul Weiss litigator and chairperson Brad Karp captures that in an interview with SuperLawyers. Karp describes what he does as: “You cannot take anything for granted … I will think about my clients’ problems night and day until a solution emerges.” Those specific solutions are what has made him not only an in-demand lawyer but also the rainmaker for the law firm he leads.

The irony is that despair remains an equally brisk seller, currently. That’s what, for example, myriad media centers are peddling. Here is today’s headliner in The Wall Street Journal:

“Mortgage Rates Top 6% for the First Time Since the 2008 Financial Crisis. Already, higher rates are forcing some would-be buyers to continue renting or to skimp elsewhere”

In addition, the lack of hope is the ethos of the content on the professional platform Reddit Jobs. Advertising provides the revenue and eyeballs glue onto the bad. Typical is a posting like this:

“I just got rejected from a minimum wage paying job!!!!!”

The majority of the almost 60 comments coming in also talk darkness. Here is the thread.

It could just be, as Barack Obama asserted in his campaign book, that holding on to hope was/is, well, an audacity. Don’t get happy-clappy on us.

Business might have bifurcated into hope and despair. Many of us in the hope category are in a growth mode and can charge premium rates. Those peddling despair tend to be in competitive dog fights and frequently have been limited in their revenue/profit potential.

Full Disclosure: When I was in academia I peddled the negative - and earned peanuts.
