Tech Has Moved Us Indoors and Into Ourselves - Tarot Reader as Rent-a-Friend

Maybe it kicked off with the technology of air-conditioning. Remember how we commiserated together about the summer heat while we sat on our stoops in cities and porches in small towns.

But, as the Netflix documentary "Social Dilemma" hammers it is the social network which is escalating the inability of human beings to connect. It is alleged that Big Tech has strategically engineered that disconnect from in-person interaction. The human condition is circumscribed to screen experiences.

In the short book "In Emergency, Break Glass," tech journalist Nate Anderson sums that up as "moving indoors." Neighbors have no access to other neighbors. They are indoors, not jaw-jawing over the fence.

The add-on I would make is that we have also moved into ourselves. Given the dominance of screen reality there seems to be no way out of ourselves. That blocks interaction with others.

So, it should not be a surprise that the Tarot reader like myself has become a version of "rent-a-friend." That's what therapists had been labeled by critics of the talking cure.

Currently, because of inflation many have backed off from psychotherapy. Instead they are tapping into the less-expensive sessions with a Tarot reader. At Spiritual Rose, based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a Tarot reading bills at two dollars a minute. That's a bargain compared to the co-pay for most traditional therapy.

So many clients come to me to simply talk about developments in their lives which would have been hashed out with a close friend - the kind we had in the college dorms.

For instance, a middle-aged woman had a subtle negative encounter with a superior. For relief from the confusion she needed to share the details with a human being she assumed was listening. Only after that telling that story did she open herself to input on that from the Tarot cards.

To me that seems like an inefficient use of the time paid for in a Tarot reading. But it's palpable that's the growing need. Simply to have access to a listener.

Those, of course, who still are capable of listening have the edge in both relationships and business. I go to the auto mechanic who listens to how I am describing the problems I am having with my car. He or she will ask questions. That's in contrast to those mechanics who seem bored with my anxious recitation of "symptoms." Obviously, they are not listening to my pain.

The odds are that Big Tech will continue to screen us in more and more. There's so much money in that.
