The New York Times Made Tarot Legitimate, But It's Still Contrarian (leverage that for top earning potential)
"Star of the show’: how Liz Cheney led the charge against Donald Trump" - Financial Times, July 22, 2022.
In most professions, including politics, there is a glut of talent. The driver in a career is the hunger to differentiate yourself from all the others seeking name recognition. Tom Peters called that "personal branding."
One strategy is to take on the identity of a contrarian - yes, like Cheney. When the GOP was in lockstep to support Donald Trump, at least in public, she pointed out what was not at all right. She's still doing that and frequently is on the digital front page of media.
All being a contrarian entails is going up against what is expected. If everyone is gushing about meditation, you 1) hammer the negatives associated with meditation and 2) discuss better alternatives for clarity in thinking and inner peace. Soon enough you'll be invited to give a Ted Talk.
In the dogfight of what the world of Big Law is about, the chairperson of Paul Weiss Brad Karp has occupied the contrarian space. At a time when the practice of law in that high tier had been circumscribed to just that - practicing law - Karp added on.
Those add-ons range from aggressively supporting social justice to approaching a client's legal problem with a holistic business perspective. Karp doesn't seem to find the old joke amusing. That is, the clients won their case, but then their businesses collapsed. In Leaders Magazine, Karp explained the need to provide business solutions, not just standalone legal guidance, to clients.
In entertainment, another cut-throat industry - the late Betty White decided not to be put out to pasture. She reconfigured her brand - how contrarian - as an aging woman. That had been a persona female actresses combatted. Incidentally, in struggling to battle that aging stigma Madonna seems to be undermining her legacy. An alternative would have been to innovate a contrarian stance, like White, about the aging process.
My contrarian ventures? In the platitude-filled career-counseling space I have flagged the earnings potential of being a Tarot reader. There is no credentials barrier. Put together a brandname and you can earn four-figures for a one-hour reading. Here is my article in Medium. In April 2021, a feature in The New York Times saluting the Tarot as tool for self-awareness gave the industry new credibility.
Here is my Tarot site. Another contrarian move has been to veer off the evidence-based track of writing about law (I killed off my syndicated site Law and More) to becoming a thought leader in mysticism. My earnings in that, plus the ability to reduce suffering, could exceed what I had pulled down playing in conventional communications sandboxes.
