College Students & DIY Tarot Readings - The New York Times Provides the How-To

"Revlon Inc is facing pushback to its proposed $1.4 billion bankruptcy loan, with its official creditors committee opposing the loan and calling the cosmetic company’s case a “mess” in a Wednesday court filing. - Reuters Legal, July 21, 2022

Here we are again. A bankruptcy - this time Revlon - has taken on more complexity.

Yes, bankruptcy a lucrative practice for lawyers such as Paul Basta, partner at Paul Weiss. According to Law.com, Basta is billing at $1,735 p/h. To college juniors weighing different career paths that might appear quite good. Not only could they decide to apply to law schools. They will prepare to enter the bankruptcy niche. (Hey, juniors, restructuring is also well-paying.)

However, with so many conflicting parties and so much money involved in a bankruptcy and so much up to the decision-making of the bankruptcy judge the work takes lawyers into an almost unreal force field of stress.

Was there a correlation with the growing complexity of the Mattress Firm bankruptcy and suicide of Sidley Austin partner Gabe MacConaill? We will never know that. But what we do know is that, as law firms at that top tier are structured, MacConaill also had internal responsibilities. And as the power ruled, he was reported by his widow not to have access to additional help from the firm. Here is Joanna Litt's open letter in Law.com on much of that.

Maybe MacConaill, as the saying goes, "couldn't take it." Maybe Basta can. Time will tell.

That's where self-awareness has to kick in for youth betting the ranch (there are tremendous sunk costs involved) on a career path. They have to understand their ability to absorb and navigate pressure.

Sure, ambition may create the magical thinking that, sure, they can manage the whatevers of a profession or a particular job. But, as we read daily on Subreddit Big Law most can't. Even after one year in a brandname law firm they have a sense of losing control over their work and their lives.

Fortunately, there is a DIY tool for self-awareness. That is learning how to do a Tarot reading. In April 2021, The New York Times gave a blessing for doing just that. In addition, there were instructions on the how. In addition, in the 2021 book "Tarot for Change," Jessica Dore documents that tool as also useful for acceptance and growth. It ranks high on Amazon - 31,064.

Here is my own five-step guide on mastering your own ability to read the Tarot.

In professional life, there are no absolutes. There is only the intersection of the traditional demands of the work and how the human being is put together.
