Post The American Dream
"Dream" - that is the daytime one not what runs during the night - is a term that makes us roll our eyes when it pops up now.
In 2026, a Martin Luther King activist probably wouldn't say they had a dream. Instead, they would motivate followers with "a powerhouse strategy and bulging war chest of funding."
For instance, here it is in a BusinessInsider post about Gen X. The odds are that they will not be able to live the retirement dream. So?
Annyone doing the math knows that renting financially beats out the one-time dream of home ownership.
And lower-income parents' dream of sending their children to college may flash that they haven't caught up with the law of supply and demand. There's such a glut of educated.
Most of us learn the most from our clients. In tarot readings it's obvious to me that talk about making ends meet and building something has replaced a burst of euphoria about taking on a dream. Much of this involves a pivot in how to earn a living or outfoxing either aging or age bias. The employer realities of cost-efficiency and AI have been brutal. Also, bodies give out in some lines of work.
The shift in language not only involves ditching all the variations of "dream." Employers also don't want to hear about your passion, being a fast learner or creative. Here on main street we don't want to hear you pine about the unaffordability of home ownership. Look around. There are too many who can't even put a roof over their heads for the night. And, come on, you've been warned about the peril of investing in higher education.
Survival and going beyond that mandate being in the now. That's where opportunity develops. That's when snippets of happiness can be grabbed on to. Immersing yourself in a dream? That more and more opens up into heartache.
