Reversal of Fortune: Just a Matter of Time (and you luck out if it happens early in a life)
LinkedIn, Reddit, Blind and more feature detailed accounts of "having the rug pulled from under them."
Maybe it was the sector such as journalism which collapsed. Almost two decades in and with lots of awards they lost their jobs and landing a replacement position doesn't look good.
Or it could be age bias. Way back in 2018, ProPublica warned that was the fate of at least half of those over-50. If they did land a replacement only 10% would receive comparable compensation. Most likely they would tumble from the professional class into survival jobs.
Shift to a personal life. A child dies. They are diagnosed with ALS. The divorce wipes out the nest egg.
Because this reversal of fortune might be happening relatively late in life the real tragedy is that so many lack the realization that no one cares. At least not enough to help put their lives back together. Before, people seemed to care. That's how networking goes. It operates on the Favor Bank. There's the illusion that a whole bunch of folks are in your corner. Sure, they are when you are making hefty deposits into the Favor Bank.
In a sense, my Generation of Lost Scholars gained a distinct competitive advantage and edge in coping with life as it is.
Here's our story. In the late 1960s the US government projected a critical shortage of humanities professors. Solution? Provide NDEA Title IV funding - tuition + living stipend - for the best and the brightest to matriculate for the PhD. And off we went to pursue academic excellence.
As most of us were finishing our dissertations the wheel of fortune turned against us.
The critical shortage has mutated into a glut.
No one cared.
In fact, when we sought out non-academic middle-class jobs we were vilified for having been "professional students." What we had been doing for the past five-plus years became a source of shame.
We were lost and instead of being found (as is promised in "Amazing Grace") we scrambled. Did we ever.
Before I created a lucrative 40-year career in communications I bounced around from job to job. The point is: That shame-filled journey didn't stop me or most of my fellow former scholars from finally getting to work we loved and an upscale lifestyle. No surprise, when my communications expertise was no longer marketable I saw the opportunity in transforming volunteer pursuits in tarot/intuitive coaching into paid work.
The takeaway: The next is up to you.

connections and inner peace.
