Wage Deflation, Quality Sucked Out of Jobs, Tense Workplaces

 It's confirmed. You're not imagining it. There really is wage deflation because of AI. The New York Times reports:

" ... occupations highly exposed to A.I. have experienced a 6.7 percent decline in real wage growth since 2023." 

That's not only at the front end, that is when being hired into a job. While on the job, the employer can give you an either/or: Accept a cut in compensation or be gone. Reddit posts:

"I'm in a really tough spot and hoping someone has advice. My company just announced a restructuring. They said my current role is being eliminated but offered me a 'new' position. The catch is it's the exact same job but with a 15% pay cut."

In addition, the nature of the deflation can take even another form. That's dragging feet on what is usually lockstep increases in compenation.

Law Fuel notes a halt in the traditional ritual of matching the number that market-makers in the legal sector puts out there. Few law firms, so far, have matched the Milbrank increase. Yet inflation has increased. Many of those associate jobs are in HCOL areas such as New York City. Rent keeps going up.

There should be no surprise that law firms aren't increasing salaries. Paul, Weiss partner Brad Karp warned back in 2025 to Lawyer Monthly: AI is going to significantly reduce the demand for junior lawyers. That turned out to be on-the-money fast. Already hiring of entry-levels is down 7.5%.

Karp also added, which threw a chill throughout all classficiation of functions in law firms, this: Some practices could become commodities because of AI. Instead of 10 partners in that practice you might only need three. Partnership is no longer forever. De-equitization or simply being forced out of the firm could be in the cards, as we say in tarot reading.

In addtion to lower wages, the NYT notes that positions are being stripped of what doing them made the tasks engrossing. Given they have almost total leverage in the labor market, employers don't have to invest in job enrichment to attract and retain talent. We tarot treaders hear from clients all the time how deadening their work life has become. 

This perfect storm sweeping through workplaces has created internal tension. One analyst in healthcare told me:

"I used to look forward to coming into work. Now, I worry about the 'gossip.' What are 'they' saying about me and will that whatever get back to top management. It's hard to sleep."

High on the list is self-employment. The solopreneur model is popular. That's especially among those over-65 receiving Medicare and don't have to hold onto a job because of the medical insurance. 

Another solution is retraining. A client who had been a graphic designer reset as a real estate agent. Even in this down market they are getting listings. A third is early retirement, with a move to a LCOL region such as Okalhoma or Northwest Ohio.

The Scenic Route and Other Pivots Away from Efficiency
