Outsourcing Thinking: Finally, We Now Can Get Back to Being Effective, Happy and Totally Human
Before I learned to think critically (BA, MA, PhD, 1L at Harvard Law School) I was a very effective human being. Happy too.
Like Caveman, I lived by my wits. I went out there from the tenement apartment in the early 1950s to the mean streets of pre-gentrified Jersey City, New Jersey and functioned splendidly.
In fact, I was way ahead of my times. For instance, at age 11, I operated a Wallace Brown solopreneurship peddling greeting cards and religious icons. More importantly, I was free of clinical depression, imposter syndrome and self-hate. Those arrived during my MA studies.
You know the story. Our Boomer generation was the first in America to matriculate en masse in higher education. By then, the university have mutated from being the trade school the Puritans had established in 1636 to train ministers into a freak institution pursuing pure thought.
In Freshman year drilled into us was the Scientific Method. Ah, the supremacy of reason. And there it was: We were separated from our bodies and maybe easy access to happiness. Intuition? Mysticism? To today, we tarot readers are mocked in too many circles.
Finally, though, there may be liberation from all that. Simultaneously, though, humans can continue to earn a living through application of cognitive processes via technology. That's thanks to AI, of course.
The transfer mechanism is called "outsourcing thinking."
Many experts of the whatevers decry it.
The Economist documents that scores in standardized testing are going down. (Caveman didn't need that indicator to find dinner, get home alive and engage in art.)
James Marriottt warns us in "The New Dark Ages" that we're going to stop reading, retreating back into an oral culture. Horrors, the next gen will never experience the joy of reading "Middlemarch."
Since November 30, 2022, when OpenAI launched ChatGPT, we've been able to yes, outsource more and more of our thinking.
Decision-making has been easier and many of the results based on that have been great.
Instead of plowing through myriad internet research sources, the chat bot does the lion's share of those tedious tasks.
Plus, a blessing in these inflationary times is the money saved by having ChatGPT think through mundane legal issues. Lawyers on Maine Street could wind up out-of-business. In the Lawyer Monthly Paul, Weiss partner Brad Karp projected that AI could even transform sophisticated specialties into commodities. So much for law students in 2026 investing an average of $200k to learn to think critically.
So, here we are, hopefully. Thinking less. Back using all our senses. Fully in the present. Able to more fully engage with others. Part of writer Ernest Hemingway's code was: Don't think, operate.
No surprise, demand for my tarot reading services has increased. Currently I enter into the total reality of the client, spout out theory not at all. BTW, isn't that why much of psychotherapy is ineffective? Over-reliance on the theory imprinted in academic degree programs.
No debate. No, we don't want our medical doctors to not use the scientific method. However, old-fashioned healing might be restored if they connect deeply with where we are in this human journey. For instance, in middle age is the stress of earning a living. In aging, there is the hunger for purpose. Yes, AI frees up healthcare to be holistic.
Takeaway: There was that iconic meme that a mind was a terrible thing to waste. But consider so much loss from its being relied on excessively. In the tarot that need for balance is depicted in The Chariot card.
