Noble Mission, But Still a Business (even if non-profit) - Psychotherapy, Higher Education, Journalism and More

"If I wanted to go into business, I would have worked on Wall Street."

That was a reply a psychotherapist gave me when I asked how was business for their private practice. No, it wasn't a non-profit.

But that it's-a-business concept also applies to not-for-profit higher education. BTW, its market value is more than $738 billion.

And, of course, there's journalism with the noble purpose of providing truth. More of the content is behind a paywall. As it should be. After all, it is a business.

But, that's just the tip of the iceberg. So many other services consumers pay for, including psychic readings, have to operate like businesses. Therefore, consumer beware. Approach the buyer's journey with the alert mindset that, despite the lofty branding and the seeming purity of motive, that this is a commercial transaction.

Fortunately, that Ah-Ha is occurring among youth and their parents in career planning. Is enrolling in the university, once a revered institution, promising as an investment in the future of earning a good living? Long forgotten is this: When the Puritans established Harvard in 1636 it was as a trade school. That was to train clergy. America was founded on extreme pragmatism. It had to be. The weather in the New Land where the Mayflower landed was unforgiving and those already based in that territory weren't always welcoming. 

In my tarot readings I often have to trigger the shift from habitual trust to the need for due diligence in all purchasing. That prevents my pulling the tarot card symbolizing regret.


That's the Five of Cups. The emotional pain is profound. In addition, during these inflationary times there's no longer a margin for error.

The Scenic Route and Other Pivots Away from Efficiency

  Several   years from now will the new cultural power structure be laughing hilariously at Meta, VW and more which boasted how efficient they are and how more efficient they would become.  Actually, even in its heyday - that is right now - the efficiency mandate seemed comically overwrought. The ethos reminds us of all those back-seat drivers who insisted Route A was the most efficient. Verboten was taking the scenic one that treated us to the serene snippets of cows and horses grazing, ghost towns and general stores.  In the tarot the anti-efficiency card is The Chariot. The journey is being determined by natural contours. Yeah, let it be. Don't hold tight to the reins.  The biggest successes in my career emerged when I was off the efficiency game. New York Metro Area in the 1950s: Growing Up Like Jeffrey Epstein (but we didn't become monsters)

  If you were young in the 1950s, lower middle class (or even lower) and based in the New York Metro area you probably grew up much like Jeffrey Epstein.  Today The New York Times captures the details of how it was for all of us back then. And, as the entries from his pals from those days for his 50th Birthday Book testify, there was (and is) great nostalgia for how it was.
