No Joke: Middle-Agers Positioning Prison as Retirement Solution

 "When I get 'that' age, I'll just rob a bank. That will get me three hots and a cot in a prison."

Yes, it's come to this for those generations following us Baby Boomers. We have pensions. Social Security was there and as soon as age 62. Medicare kicked in at 65. We earned enough to be able to invest. An added asset probably is a house. 

From middle-agers on through Generation Z most envision no way to stop working. That is, if they can continue to get work. There may no longer be the concept of retirement. Homelessness could take over their lives before that.

So, at a local community meeting recently that kind of gallows humor should have been predictable. When a man put it out there, others indicated that might not be a bad idea. Universally those working hated their jobs. Those not working couldn't even land gig stuff. 

Already, some might have arranged that solution for the necessities of human existence. The Prison Policy Institute reports:

State prisons: More than one million

Local jails: 620.000 to 660,000

Federal prisons: 137,000 to 155,000.

Meanwhile, it's sad to share that too many of clients for tarot readings who find life a current overwhelm embrace the fantasy of bunking under a bridge and panhandling.  That releases them from the usual responsibilities. 

They come to a reading with hope kaput. When we Boomers struggled with awful childhoods, those in the know promised: It gets batter in college. We were able to hold on. The post-WWII economic boom immersed us. We could do much better than just supporting ourselves. That allowed us to be the first gen in America to break from our families.

The snippet of hope I can conjure up is this: Learn to live by your wits. Think for yourself; after all, no one cares. 

Those who run with this frequently start up a micro business. $40k is plenty for them to get by. That's because they unplug from the consumer economy. You can beat that almost $13k annual nut for owning and operating a new car. Peddle along on an e-bike or e-trike.


This has become so common a financial solution that insurance companies such as State Farm provide e-bike insurance and AAA offers road service. 

Meanwhile, I warn those manifesting prison for the golden years that more institutions are dodging the expense of housing the aging. They could push you out with compassionate release, whether you want that or not.

The Scenic Route and Other Pivots Away from Efficiency

  Several   years from now will the new cultural power structure be laughing hilariously at Meta, VW and more which boasted how efficient they are and how more efficient they would become.  Actually, even in its heyday - that is right now - the efficiency mandate seemed comically overwrought. The ethos reminds us of all those back-seat drivers who insisted Route A was the most efficient. New York Metro Area in the 1950s: Growing Up Like Jeffrey Epstein (but we didn't become monsters)

  If you were young in the 1950s, lower middle class (or even lower) and based in the New York Metro area you probably grew up much like Jeffrey Epstein.  Today The New York Times captures the details of how it was for all of us back then.
