Retiring & Relocating: Can You Break In Socially?
Almost 40% of you will relocate when you retire. Given longevity, you might then move multiple times, even every five years.
As a tarot reader I hear all too often from disappointed retirees that what drives that second or third relocation is not a budget issue. No, it's soul-sickness. You are unable to break in socially.
So, I guide clients to explore before the move how resistant a community might be in allowing newcomers "in." By "in," I mean having a shot at close friendships.
There is the familiar dynamic: So and so are friendly, polite. But those conversations in the grocery store or at the gym never lead to an invitation to have a drink or a cup of coffee.
That's usually because in that community what count are the bonds formed over the years. They begin in grade school. The groups have bulging collective memory banks.
How to find out, before you move, the openness of the residents?
Chat bots will be straight with you. Describe yourself. For example, you're 68, widow, did the career in New York City. Then ask for an assessment of how hard would it be to become integrated into LCOL (low cost of living) ABC city in the Midwest or South. Better yet, set up comparisons. Where would it be easier, ABC or XYZ.
A significant variable can be if the city is structured for flux. Sierra Vista, Arizona, for example, has high churn. It has a military base so it is used to folks coming and going. In addition, because of the moderate weather - the elevation is over 3,000 feet - it attracts retirees. You have a built-in peer group.
But even if you choose a welcoming location, you could blow it through how you navigate early interactions. I coach on the basics.
A fundamental is studying how they do things there. Then adopt those behaviors. Don't assume the long-term residents will adjust to your ways. In the tarot deck The Chariot Card represents going with the flow.
Sometimes that card is thought of as the "sacred pause."
Another is to not directly reach out with invitations. That could be a turn-off to make the first move. Give time for them to size you up.
A third is to showcase that you're community-minded. Volunteer.
Even with all that, you remain an outsider. I recommend giving the experiment about two years. Then you should begin your due diligence about a city with more porous boundaries.
You deserve success, deep
connections and inner peace.
