June 19, 1953: The Second Very Bad Time for Boomers

 The live mediums back in June 1953 were radio and television. Those announced on June 19th that 1) Julius and Ethel Rosenberg had been executed and 2) Their young sons Robby and Michael were being taken care of. 

That was the second time in our little lives that we, the oldest of the Boomers, were shaken to the core with fear: Would we too lose our parents? Would some dark-suited tall men come in the early morning and take our parents away? Who would comb my hair for school?

The first time was around 1951. That's when we hid under our desks practicing safety for when the bad guys during the Cold War would bomb us. But the teachers never addressed our questions about would our parents also be safe at home when the bombs came. They had no desks to hide under. 

Yet, those same mediums depicted us as Happy-Clappy, always smiling in our Cowgirl/Cowboy outfits. In tarot readings I hear a lot about the remaining undercurrent of Boomer angst, as well as rage. Our interior lives were ridden with deep emotional turmoil. The Tower card in the tarot captures that.

The long-form article by Amy Weiss-Meyer in The Atlantic brings much of that time back through her interviews with The Rosenberg Boys. 

It seems that their parents Julius and Ethel, after their arrest, did a better job than society did for us at holding down fear. Through letters and in-person visits at Sing-Sing they built for their children a sturdy platform of values. It was something solid to hang on to. Yes, they were innocent and were following their conscience. During the visits there was singing, along with other ways of conjuring up family joy.

Although Robby and Michael, as orphans, were abused after the execution at the Hebrew Home, they lucked out. The kindly Anne and Abel Meeropol adopted them, eventually changing their name. As Meyer points out, Robby and Michael are quite well-adjusted. 

Of course, the sons embraced proving their parents' innocence as a cause. In the process they found out that indeed dad was the spy. Mom, a victim of her times, stood by him. Even after he was electrocuted when she had the opportunity to save her life she remained totally loyal to the story Julius had cooked up. According to Meyer they have accepted that well. The current buzzword for that is "radical acceptance."

Of course, today our Boomer fear is about very different things. At the top of the list in tarot readings is our health, along with how much of our savings we might have to shell out to keep going. Another newly pressing source of angst is where to live to escape the heat and have enough water. Or, rather this: Will we be murdered seeking access to those necessities of life? A third is will there be World Worl III, which was supposed to be prevented by the war to end all wars. How many of our relatives will be drafted?

Meanwhile, religion is failing us. It's all about being a better human being. What we need is peace of mind.
