Sure, You're Changing, But Not Fast Enough

"That colleague blocked me. No conversation why."

A new client told me that. But the lament wasn't new to me. This is "cut-off culture." No longer do people feel the responsibility or the need to talk about why they're exiting your life.

The client was intuitive. So they had a hunch that this particular former friend sized them up as "stuck." In this fast-moving world in which just about everyone has to scramble for an edge, being perceived as stuck is right up there with being known as unethical or hostile.

As we proceeded in the tarot reading I picked up that this client wasn't stuck. They were changing. The reality, though, is that they weren't doing that fast enough. At least, not what it takes to be in synch with 2026. Instead of taking concrete steps in a reset in how to earn a good living, they remained in the limbo of emotionally gearing up. Obviously, that was being held against them.

The focus of the reading shifted to what was blocking experimenting with options. As usual it reached back to the Five of Cups card in the tarot.

That is the regret card. The emotional set can be all consuming.

Yet, regret is nothing but a fantasy about what could be. Not what actually did play out and therefore could be evaluated.

This client obsessed about not majoring in pre-med in college. Instead, they had gone the technical route. Until about 18 months ago they had experienced a profession with lots of runway. Also, since he was on the spectrum his motor skills were probably not up to where they had to be to get through medical training and early career demands. In addition, would they have been able to engage deeply with sick patients? Did they have the temperament?

The issue was not to ponder supposed wrong decisions in the past. It was to invest totally in bringing all aspects of a life to where they have to be in the now. That means moving the needle with greater intensity. When Bob Iger started out in his second round as CEO for Disney, he had been stuck. The media landscape had mutated. A man used to success, Iger put together a new game - rapidly.

A useful guide is "Necessary Endings" by executive coach Henry Cloud.
