2026: No Longer Are Most Americans Flying High as a Jay Gatsby, Too Many Shrunk into a Willy Loman

It was that dream overreach. We were all Jay Gatsby. "They" warned us that if we continued to hunger for more we would wind up just like him: Destroyed, eventually literally. Gatsby, the tragic presence F. Scott Fitzgerald conjured up, came from nothing, achieved great wealth but that wasn't enough. He also chased the old-money ethos, embedded in Daisy.

So, culturists and clergy hammered: Enough is enough. You are enough.

That was one of those luxury kinds of moral teachings, from a much better time. Maybe players like Goldman Sachs' Kathy Ruemmler weren't paying attention. The evil genius of Jeffrey Epstein is that he was able to size up that seeming hunger and move right in.

Now, it's likely too many overreachers have collapsed into a frightened Willy Loman. I pick up that tragic presence often in tarot readings. In the tarot it's symbolized by the Nine of Wands.

No surprise Broadway has a blockbuster in that revival of Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman." Main character Loman is broken. By capitalism, aging, inability to connect and not understanding how to reset for changing times.

Yes, Loman begs for his job, all-too-willing to be underpaid. ProPublica documented that if you're over-50 you're bound to be forced out. If you're lucky and land another job in your field, only 10% of you will earn comparable money.

Meanwhile, the prototype of what's hardening into a future Loman are the majority of young and educated. Almost the majority of baristas have college degrees. Read Reddit regularly. The despair is building among the 20-something.

Loman reduces us to weeping, maybe sobbing. That's because there are no universal solutions.

The ones foisted on both the old and young are heavily flawed.

For example, not everyone can start and operate a business.

The trades aren't all that welcoming to new entries. Those inside can be brutal gatekeepers protecting their own job security and high level of compensation.

And, the technology. Already there are driverless trucks.

Also, come on, going for most advanced degrees is a risky investment. So are some certifications.

What about fit? A growing number of my clients who are well-paid nurses hate the work.

What I help do is this: Open shut-down humans to embrace a very selective energetic version of the Serenity Prayer:

"God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change
the courage to change the things I can
and the wisdom to know the difference."

Five years ago I accepted that I could not change that content-creation was plummeting in demand. The compensation got more and more lousy. Soul-crushing was letting go of it as the main source of income. I had been a star. Eventually I let it be over.

Somehow, I grabbed onto the confidence to try out two sidelines for full-time income. Those panned out. But I also have to accept the peak earning years are over.

Takeaway: Accept. Look for opportunity. Try things out. Again accept, such as constraints on earnings, at least for the time being.

Path to earning a good living, finding your tribe and not going insane is doable.

Let’s start the journey together with a Tarot reading.
