Young, Searching and Made to Feel Special - The Miss Hall's Too Predictable Rite of Passage

Former history teacher at Miss Hall's private school Matthew Rutledge has been indicted on three counts of rape. The alleged victims were his students. 

From clients still having flashbacks of those kinds of schoolgirl encounters I have been able to identify what kind of young person winds up in that traumatic connection.

She's not a loser. 

In fact, she has the intellectual push to explore beyond the classroom. The instructor encourages that. Private tutorials are part of the grooming. 

But she, like most of us, also needs to "feel special." Not just another student. 

In addition, supposedly having an intimate relationship with an authority figure opens a peculiar rite of passage. There's that premature crossing of the line over to adulthood. Let the rest of the classmates be stuck in the seeming arrested development of being controlled in the protected category of being a mere student.

How can parents head this off?

Obviously, if the daughter gushes a bit too much about a teacher, investigate. Yes, we praise the earnest instructor. But no teacher should be that over-identified with what is really just a job. There's bound to be something off.

More often, though, the relationship is stealth. That's adds to its intensity. Has this young person withdrawn into a private self? There are so many tells. Among them are withdrawing from the usuals, like hanging out with classmates, pushing in sports, blossoming in other subjects, not just the one taught by the predator and seeming lost back at home during school vacations.

The emotional damage, of course, can be profound. At the top of the list is the inability to trust.  So, not only parents but educational institutions should be alert to signs of instructor over-involvement.

Aging - Holding On To Sense Of A Self

  The Wall Street Journal fingers retirement for the epidemic of a loss of self among the aging.  However, the process can kick in as soon as anyone senses they are no longer young. Gone is their youthful self. Denying aging, they don't invest in creating a new self - and continually bringing up to date that identity.
