All are for "protection."

But those in the loop rarely explain that the entity we humans most need protection from is our very selves. Usually that reality manifests itself after we have been through the wringer. Then, we have those Ah-Ha moments. We unleashed our own destruction.

Founders of Alcoholics Anonymous Bill W. and Dr. Bob, who certainly had been through the wringer, recognized how dangerous they were. Part of their mission was to protect the fledging organization from their own foibles. For example, they could have made the simple program complex. They could have imposed control on what was structured to be peer-to-peer healing.

In tarot readings I attempt to open the suffering to discern their part in creating, nurturing and escalating the pain. Throughout civilization the great thinkers have steered us to recognize our self-destructive default. They include authors of the Old Testament of the Bible, William Shakespeare, Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Michael Kinnucan and Alec Moyner. Adam and Eve kicked it all off with their intellectual pride.

There is a joke that graduate schools of business should have an elective course: How to stay out of jail. Recall that Harvard Business School graduate Jeffrey Skilling, former Enron CEO, did some serious time in the slammer. I suggest that kind of instruction for law schools. Too many of the lawyers I have provided tarot readings for have lost it all. 

But instead of stay out of jail guidance students preparing for professional services careers might have a humanities seminar on how art captures our chase after self-ruin. A classic is "The Great Gatsby." 

Meanwhile we can protect ourselves with a fearless inventory of our behavior. What was the motivation? What was the real hoped-for outcome? Was the action necessary? In addition to ourselves, who else was harmed? How can we do better in the future? American Buddhist nun Pema Chodron counsels: Start where you are.

Don't Expect Compassion - The Sidley Biter and More

Aging - Holding On To Sense Of A Self

  The Wall Street Journal fingers retirement for the epidemic of a loss of self among the aging.  However, the process can kick in as soon as anyone senses they are no longer young. Gone is their youthful self. Denying aging, they don't invest in creating a new self - and continually bringing up to date that identity. By time there is a shift from a demanding career to part-time, freelance, entrepreneurial or no work there is no emotional, physical and spiritual platform to keep building on. In the Tarot there are myriad cards which salute moving on and breaking free from the past, even though there is so much uncertainty about the present and the future.  My favorite card for that is the Eight of Cups.
