Social Status: In Post-Epstein File Era, Heathcliff, Catherine Wouldn't Have Fallen in Love

"He doesn't even have a car."

In most social niches car ownership is a marker of at least middle class social status. This client for a tarot reading (identity masked) was upset when finding out the man pursuing her didn't even have a car. She assumed he was tooling around on an e-bike for exercise and adventure.

That kind of conversation took place months before the Epstein files dump. Even then there had been a fierce sensitivity regarding what goes into socioeconomics.

In the new book "Anointed," business professor Toby Stuart documents how much social status shapes everything from how humans are treated to the opportunities open to them. The tone and content of the Epstein files detailed the operations of one large circle of that privileged world. Also, there's no ambiguity: For most of us there would be no invitations to dinner parties at Jeffrey Epstein's mansions. Middle class not welcome. We don't have enough of value to exchange on the network.

So, although there is sustained fascination with the Emily Bronte 1847 saga of doomed love between stable boy Heathcliff and social-climber Catherine, such a romance would probably not get even started currently. Both "would know better." Neither would have crossed the line.

Sure we can enjoy all the film versions of "Wuthering Heights." But we shake off the plot as fiction.

More proof of that? Hover over professional anonymous networks Reddit, Fishbowl, Blind and Glassdoor. The issues discussed make it obvious that much of the norms of social status remain hardened. Unemployed males feel less-than taking on the role of househusband. The junior dentist in a practice on the Gold Coast of Connecticut is told to buy a better car. For males the number-one marker is the watch. For females the dress.

Because of this, even in casual relationships power can be unequal among different social classes. That's why the concept of "finding your own people" is so wise. In tarot readings I hear deep hurt experienced by those who assumed the social playing field was level. I guide them how to find their own tribes.
