Skipping Meals and Other Acts of Desperation among the Creative Class

Four years ago I was interviewed in a podcast about how-to-freelance strategies. The host edited out my statement about my own transition from content-creation to tarot reading. I didn't balk. At the time I was still on the defensive about no longer being able to make a good living as a member of the Creative Class.

Now, that host likely is among the creatives and more who are skipping meals to pay their bills and not wind up homeless. Also they probably are skipping long drives, vacations and buying new. About the latter, Goodwill and other thrift shops are jam-packed.

Meanwhile, during the past four years I have built a reserve in my checking account. Added to the investment fund. This week I was hired for a tarot-reading gig at a local spiritual shop. And I haven't missed a meal.

Here's the real tragedy in this reversal of fortune for so many creatives: They remains closed systems about the law of supply and demand.

It doesn't matter how talented they are in writing or design or special effects. Employers and clients are willing to only pay for good-enough. Often that can be delivered via AI. Sure, strategists and editor types are still needed in the loop. But not many of them.

A former colleague in content-creation allowed me to treat them to lunch. It was a friendly catch-up. Was that a meal they usually skipped? They were down from six steady clients to a single just-in-time account. What was puzzling was that they felt proud and even superior that they were still able to hold on in a creative field. Such noble suffering?

That copywriter didn't ask for advice. I didn't give it.

In contrast, during tarot readings I am more and more straight-off-the-shoulder. Directly I pose the question: Could you be increasing your income from work and not struggling to make it on less and less? If that triggers the Ah-Ha moment then we move on to possible experiments.

Given our love of pets, grooming is in demand. Training is affordable. Eventually invest in a mobile service and the money is there.

What about operating a high-end residential cleaning service. Annually that could generate for your hands-on work $100k. More if you are the owner overseeing work crews.

Running errands for the busy and for shut-ins has always been available.

Develop expertise in AI? Sure, look into it.

The takeaway here for the Creative Class is this: "Creativity" needs to be re-defined. The junkmen peddling stuff via horse and cart in our old late 1940s Jersey City, New Jersey neighborhood were plenty creative in what to source and how to get folks running out of their tenements to buy. Unlike us first-generation college folks who embraced the arts, they retired to the Jersey Shore in their 50s.

Finding your way in confusing times starts from the inside.
